Biomass
What is it ?
Biomass is any organic matter. Available on a renewable basis. Small diameter trees and brush from forest thinning operations, wood residues. Short rotation woody crops planted to produce energy. Wood waste from demolition or other sources.
Biomass in India
32% of the total primary energy use is still using biomass 70% of the countrys population depends upon it for its energy needs. The availability of biomass in India is estimated at about 540 million tones per year India ranks second in the world in biogas utilisation. 50 million hectares of degraded wasteland
Advantages
Theoretically inexhaustible fuel source . When direct combustion of plant mass is not used to generate energy, there is minimal environmental impact . Alcohols and other fuels produced by biomass are efficient, viable, and relatively cleanburning. Available throughout the world.
Challenges
Huge untapped potential Cost competitiveness of technologies Transmission issues Environmental concerns competing demands for biomass feedstock Government policies
Geothermal Energy
What is it ?
Thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth. Thermal energy determines the temperature of matter. Earth's geothermal energy originates from - the original formation of the planet. - radioactive decay of minerals. - volcanic activity. - from solar energy absorbed at the surface.
Opportunities
Requires no fuel. Highly scalable. Geothermal heat supports many applications. Geothermal heat pumps can be used for space heating essentially anywhere Direct heating applications can use much shallower wells with lower temperatures. Considered to be sustainable. Falling electricity production may be boosted through drilling additional supply boreholes.
Fluids drawn from the deep earth carry a mixture of gases, notably carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methane (CH4) and ammonia (NH3). These pollutants contribute to global warming, acid rain, and noxious smells if released Plant construction can adversely affect land stability Plant construction can adversely affect land stability capital costs are significant. Drilling accounts for over half the costs, and exploration of deep resources entails significant risks.
Challenges
SOLAR ENERGY
35,000 km2 area of the Thar Desert has been set aside for solar power projects. Generates 700 GW to 2,100 GW. India is currently ranked number one along with the United States in terms of solar energy production per watt installed.
Opportunities
Rural electrification A target for electrifying 5,000 such villages was set for the Tenth National Five Year Plan (2002 2007). As of 2004, more than 2,700 villages and hamlets had been electrified, mainly using solar photovoltaic systems. Projects currently planned include 3000 villages of Odisha, which will be lighted with solar power by 2014.
Agricultural support Solar PV water pumping systems are used for irrigation and drinking water. . Solar driers are used to dry harvests before storage.
Solar water heaters Bangalore has the largest deployment of rooftop solar water heaters in India. Pune has also recently made installation of solar water heaters in new buildings mandatory.
Challenges
Hydel Energy
What is it ?
Combination of forces created by the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon, and the rotation of the earth. Used for generation of electricity: - Tidal energy: This uses the potential energy of the water body. - Wave energy: Uses the kinetic energy to rotate the underwater power turbines. This can be loosely described as an underwater wind farm. - Thermal energy: Using the thermal energy of oceans to generate electricity.
Opportunities
High potential to harness tidal energy. Total potential is estimated at 8,000 mw with Gulf of Cambay accounting for over 90%. Potential locations in this regard are Gulf of Cambay, Gulf of Kutch and Ganges Delta, Sunderbans, West Bengal. Sunderbans in West Bengal has good locations for small scale tidal power development.
Challenges
Intermittent supply Cost The altering of the ecosystem at the bay Only provides power for around 10 hours Present designs do not produce a lot of electricity Barrages affect fish migration and other wildlife.
Wind Energy
What is it ?
conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy such as using wind turbines to make electricity windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps for water pumping or drainage, or sails to propel ships.
Advantages
Friendly to the surrounding environment. Wind turbines take up less space than the average power station. Newer technologies are making the extraction of wind energy much more efficient Great resource to generate energy in remote locations, such as mountain communities and remote countryside. When combined with solar electricity, this energy source is great for developed and developing countries to provide a steady, reliable supply of electricity.
Challenges
Initial cost for wind turbines is great. Noise produced by the rotor blades. There is interference on television signals. Wind resources might not be available near cities. Wind cannot be stored (unless batteries are used) Not all winds can be harnessed to meet the timing of electricity demands.
