STAIN REMOVAL

The wide variety of fabrics:cellulosic, proteinic, synthetic and their

blends, the different type of finishes are given to the fabrics and the
numerous source of stains make stain removal a complicated task.
The first step then in stain removal is to identify the stain. It is also
necessary to identify the fiber content and of the fiber is coloured to
check whether the colour is fast.
Procedures for stain removal

1.Solvent action.
2.Mechanical and emulsifing actio.
3.Chemical action, oxidation and reduction.
4.Digestion.
5.Absorption.
BLOOD STAIN
BLOOD STAIN

Components of Blood stain:

Water
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Glucose
Proteins
Hormones
Metabolites

Protein will easily bind together with heat.. Then it may cause
more stick to the stain in dry condition.
Solvents used to remove blood stains

Hydrogen peroxide
Is the bleaching agent, These oxidizing agents break down the color-causing
components of chemical structures so that the stain becomes invisible.
Oxygenated bleach (soda ash).

White vinegar
can break down blood stains while also disinfecting the area.

Vinegar ->soaking in cold water for 30 minutes ->washing with warm soapy
water.

Ammonia
To remove stubborn blood stain, One tablespoon of ammonia+ ½ cup of
lukewarm water.
Meat tenderizer powder

Helpfull in breaking down protein molecule.

Rubbing alcohol

To clean white cloth blood stain.

Lemon juice

Acidity in lemon juice helps in removing mensuration blood stain.

Enzyme used

• Protease enzyme
Oil/Grease stain
Oil/Grease stain removal
Organic solvents:
Dry cleaners remove oil and grease spots from clothing
by using an organic solvent called perchloroethylene.

Hexane or carbon tetrachloride:

The dispersion forces between oil and hexane lead to
the stain removal process.

Carbon tetrachloride used as a cleansing agent in the

dry cleaning industry.
Alcohol
Alcohol is the best solvent to dissolve
grease. For instance, isopropyl alcohol will

quickly break down grease.

Other solvents like

Dish soap
Baking soda
Corn starch
Lestoil
Hairspary
• WD 40
• Talcum powder Or fullers earth powder
Enzyme used
 Lipase enzyme
Rust stain
Rust stain

Rust forms when these three elements

combine and create an electrochemical
reaction. Iron + water + oxygen →
hydrated iron(III) oxide
Sulfur oxidising bacteria
Acidothiobacillus thiooxidans and
Ferrobacillus ferroxidans produces
H2SO4 and oxidizes iron to iron oxides
and hydroxide rust.
Rust stain removal
Old stain removal
Use salt or baking soda with another agent, like lemon juice, to remove old, dried
rust stains from fabric.
Solvents to remove rust stain:
Oxalic acid:
mix a solution of oxalic acid and warm water in equal proportions and
apply the solution to the target object.
Hydrogen peroxide
hydrogen peroxide together with a teaspoon of tartar cream and baking soda.
Steps to remove rust stains
1.Apply Salt and Lemon Juice.
2.Apply a Stain-Removing Paste.
3.Apply Rust Remover
4.Wash as Usual
Tea stain
Tea stain
Tea stain :
The reason is that tea contains tannin (or tannic acid) which gives tea
its colour.
Tannin is used as an agent for many dyes , hence the reason that a stain
is left in cup.
Apply borax solution and allow to dry then launder
Tea stain removal
Solvents to remove tea stain:
Bicarbonate of soda :it’s your best ally in removing tea stains.
To mix a few drops of water to make a loose paste.
Persil Dual Actions Capsules:
Wet cloth , place it into the washing machine and wash at a warm temperature
– about 30°C.Pop a Persil Dual Action Capsule directly into the drum – the
built-in stain removers will get to work on any stubborn stains.
Vinegar
Apply vinegar and soak for 30 mins. Apply launder detergent to remove the
vinegar smell

Baking Soda:
Apply baking soda directly to the stain. The powder will absorb any
remaining tea, drawing the colour out of the clothing and into the powder.
Leave overnight, and then scrape the powder off.
Persil Small & Mighty

Use the Persil small & mighty dosing ball to apply detergent directly
onto the wet stain
Stain removing solvents
Paint :
Turpentine, kerosene or denatured spirit.
Ice cream,milk:
Carbon tetrachloride.
Henna:
Milk.
Glue,gum:
Hot water+glycerin.
Grass:
Methylated spirit.
Lipstic
Soften by glycerin, apply Methylated spirit
Shoe polish
To emulsify oil or grease and treat with denatured spirit
Ball – point
Rub lightly with cotton swab soaked in denatured spirit.
Betel leaf
Bleach with 1% potassium permanganate (the fabric turns brown
then soak in 1% oxalic acid or 1% sodium bisulphite (till brown colour
disappears, launder)
