A little boy loses one of his new white mittens while playing in the snow. Over time, various animals find the mitten and cuddle inside to keep warm, with more and more animals squeezing in. Eventually a bear joins and sneezes, sending all the animals flying out while the enlarged mitten lands on the doorstep. When the boy finds his mitten again, he is puzzled why one is now much bigger than the other.

There was once a little boy who longed to
own a pair of cozy white mittens, so he
politely asked his grandma if she would knit him a pair. “White mittens!” his grandma exclaimed. “Surely white mittens would soon be lost in the snow. Perhaps you could choose another color.” But the boy was certain that white was the color he wanted, so his grandma eventually gave in and agreed to knit him the white mittens he greatly desired. The next day the boy received his mittens, and he hugged his grandma in thanks.
“I shall go and have fun in the snow,” he
called happily. “With my lovely warm mittens, I shall be able to play for hours!” The boy skipped off into the yard to play in the snow. His new mittens kept his hands so cozy and warm that he soon had to take them off, but he made sure that he had tucked them up safely in his pocket so that they wouldn’t get lost. He didn’t notice one of the mittens hanging out of his pocket as he climbed the old apple tree. He didn’t notice the same mitten slip out and fall to the ground as he swung himself over a branch. The same color as the crisp, fresh snow the mitten lay unnoticed by the boy who soon moved on to play elsewhere. A little brown mole was scurrying through the garden when he came upon the mitten. “Oooh how cozy!” he squealed shuffling inside the mitten. “This is the perfect place to have my afternoon nap.” He was so comfortable in the soft, warm mitten that he immediately fell fast asleep. Soon another animal came hopping through the garden. It was an inquisitive young rabbit who was puzzled to see what looked like a snoring mitten! She peeped inside and saw a little mole tucked up. It looked so cozy that she decided she would like to curl up inside the mitten too. The mole grumbled a little as she squeezed in beside him. It was nice to have some company. The two animals were happy to snuggle up together. A little while later, a prickly old hedgehog wandered by and spotted the mitten. He was amazed to see the mole and rabbit cuddled up snuggly, and he begged them to let him in too. The mole and rabbit were a little reluctant to share their cozy mitten with the hedgehog. They were worried his prickles would hurt them, but the hedgehog promised that his prickles would not get in the way, so they made room and let him. The next animal to stumble across the mitten was a fine badger with sleek stripes. He was cold and tired. When he saw the other animals nestled in the warmth of the woolly mitten, he longed to snuggle in beside them. “Please let me in,” he begged, “I’m sure you can make enough room for me too.” So the other animals, who felt sorry for the shivering badger, managed to shuffle together, and the badger was able to squeeze his way in. When a wise old owl, peeped her head into the mitten and suggested a space should be made for her as well, the other animals laughed. “Dear Owl I am sure you will simply not fit!” the hedgehog said with a snort. But when he spied the owl’s sharp talons, he quickly changed his mind. “Squeeze in Owl. Cuddle up everyone. There’s plenty of room for us all!” he said. Soon Owl was pressed firmly inside the mitten. All the animals were cozy and very warm. A slender young fox was sniffing around the yard when she noticed a patch of snow beginning to melt. When she looked closely, she saw that it was caused by the heat from all the animals inside the mitten. “That looks so warm and comfortable!” she said. “Please let me in to warm my weary bones.” The other animals looked at each other in surprise. How on Earth could a fox fit inside the mitten? It was already stretched too many times its original size. But the fox’s sad tired eyes convinced them to let her try and squish in too. After lots of huffing and puffing and shuffling and turning, the fox was in! She sighed contently and closed her eyes. The other animals were glad they had helped her. Besides, they didn’t want to get on the wrong side of a fox! The fox’s snoring was just beginning to get on the owl’s nerves when a huge bear came lumbering by. He was tired of padding through the snow. When he saw the other animals sheltering in the sizzling warmth of the mitten, he was desperate to share in their comfort. “May I please come in?” he growled kindly. The other animals didn’t need to be asked twice! They jostled and shoved a twisted around, and the mitten grew bigger and bigger. The bear pushed his nose, then his head, and finally the enormous bulk of his body into the mitten. He settled himself down to rest. When a tiny young field mouse arrived to claim her place, the other animals did not even question whether or not she would fit. They breathed in to allow the little creature to slip inside, and she nestled herself between the bear’s paws. The bear smiled at the mouse and nuzzled her gently with his nose, and that’s when it happened! It started with a little sniff, then a tickle, then a twitch of the nose and suddenly… Ah-choo! The bear’s sneeze was as huge as his bottom, and it sent all the animals flying out of the mitten and through the air. They all landed with a thud in the cold snow while the mitten landed on the step outside the front door of the house. The little boy was tiring of the snow by now, and he was just running towards the house to warm up. He spotted his mitten lying on the step, and he snatched it up as he dashed indoors. His grandma was waiting for him. “How are the mittens?” she asked, handing him a cup of nice warm milk.
“Great!” the boy replied and held them up to
show her. “But I’m not sure why one is so much bigger than the other!”
