Block Diagram of Internal Pacemaker

To Heart
Internal Pacemaker
• The timing circuit is a RC network
• A reference voltage source
• Comparator determines the basic pacing rate of pulse generator
• Its output feeds into a second RC Network
• The pulse width circuit determines the pulse duration
• The third RC Network is the rate limiting circuit
• Which disables the comparator for a preset interval
• And limits the rate to a maximum of 120 pulses per minute
• The output circuit provides a voltage pulse to stimulate the heart
• The voltage monitor circuit senses the cell depletion and
1. signals the rate slowdown circuit to produce 8 ± 3 BPM &
2. Energy compensation circuit to increase the pulse duration as
battery voltage decreases
• To maintain nearly constant stimulation energy to the heart
Internal Pacemaker
• There is a feedback loop from output circuit to refractory circuit
• Which provides a period of time (refractory )
• The amplifier will not respond to output signals
• The sensing circuit detects a R – wave and resets the oscillator
timing capacitor
• The reversion circuit allows the amplifier to detect a R-wave
• In the absence of R-wave
• The circuit allows the oscillator to pace at its reset rate ± 1BPM
