THE NATURE OF

FORCE
OBJECTIVES:
State and explain the three laws of motion.

Investigate the relationship between the amount

of force applied and the mass of the object to the
amount of change in the object’s motion.

Infer that when a body exerts a force on another, an

equal amount of force is exerted aback on it.
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. As what you’ve understand on the video,
what is force?
2. What other activities do you do that show
force?
3. Identify the four fundamental forces and
explain each briefly.
4. How does force affect our daily lives?
Every day, we can observe The world and the universe
movements around us. When are full of action. People and
we eat we, we lift our animals are constantly
utensils. This is a form of moving. The planets are
movement. When we open constantly revolving around
faucet in our home, water the sun. Is there a set of rules
drops from it, it is also a for all of this? Yes! Nature’s
form of movement. Of law govern our world and the
course, things just don’t entire universe. Physicists are
move by themselves. What scientists who study and try to
do you think causes this? understand these laws.
SI Unit = Newton (N) = 1 kg m/s2
FORCE
Normally refers to the measurement of
a push or pull. But a more scientific
concept of force is obtained when you
consider the effect of that push and
pull. Force is a push and pull exerted
by one body on another body.
General Types of Forces

Fundamental Non-fundamental

 Strong Nuclear Force  Applied Forces

 Electromagnetic Force  Friction
 Weak Nuclear Force
 Gravitational Force
Strong Nuclear Force
This force holds protons and
neutrons together in the nucleus of
an atom. This force is very strong
and destructive. This was observed
during the World War II where
atomic bombs are used that
destroy cities such as Hiroshima
and Nagasaki in Japan.
Electromagnetic Force
The electromagnetic force is either
an attractive or repulsive force
between charged bodies.
Electromagnetic force binds
electrons to the atomic nucleus,
atoms into molecules, ions in solid The force of attraction between
matter, and molecules in liquid different kinds of molecules is
and solids. called adhesion, while the
attraction between the same kind
of molecules is called cohesion.
Weak Nuclear Force

Responsible for certain types of

radioactive decay or the force that
causes changes inside the nucleus
of an atom. Although it was
recognized by scientists, still only
little information are known up
today.
Gravitational Force

Force that attracts any objects with

mass. It is also responsible for
weights of the bodies on Earth for
the motion of the planets.
Physicists have been working
on theories to unify the

everything aims to unify all
the fundamental forces.
Forces can be contact and
noncontact forces. Contact
forces are air resistance and
friction. While all the
fundamental forces are all
noncontact in nature.
Effects of Force on Object
1. Causes a stationary object to move
2. Changes the direction of the motion
3. Speed up or slow down a moving object
4. Stop a moving object
5. Change in shape
6. Change in size
 The relationship between mass
(m) and weight (w) is given by
w=mg where g is the
acceleration due to gravity,
which has a value of 9.8 m/s2.

 Mass is the quantity of matter

that a body contains. While,
weight is the force on a body
due to gravity.  Mass is a scalar quantity,
while weight is a vector
quantity.
 The mass of a body remains constant
everywhere. It weight, however, changes
since the acceleration due to gravity is
1/6 that of Earth. An object on the
surface of the moon has the same mass
as on Earth but weighs only 1/6 of its
weight on Earth.
Problem Solving:

 A ball has a mass of 15 kg.

Find its weight in Newtons.
 An object has a mass of 30
kg. What is its weight on
Earth?
 An astronaut has a mass of 90
kg on Earth. What is her
weight on Earth? What is her
weight on the moon where the
acceleration due to gravity is
1/6 that of Earth?
 If an object has a mass of 36 N
on Earth, find its mass on the
moon and find its weight on
the moon?
 A bag of groceries has a weight
of 44 Newtons. Find its
approximate mass in
kilograms?
 An object has a mass of 30 kg
and a weight of 50 N on planet
X. Find the acceleration due to
gravity on planet X.
 A piece of equipment
weighs 539 N and 209
N on Earth and Mars,
respectively. What is
the acceleration due to
gravity on the surface
of Mars?
A box has a mass of 4.15
kg. Give the weight of the
box on Earth.
An object has a mass of
110 kg, has a weight of 176
N when on the moon.
Determine the acceleration
due to gravity that is
present on the moon.
An object weighs 10 N
when measured on the
surface of the Earth. What
would be its weight when
measured on the surface of
the moon?
Given that acceleration due
to gravity on a newly
discovered planet is 14. 3
m/s2, calculate the mass of
an object with a weight of
0.27 N.
If you weigh 1177.2 N on
Earth where the
acceleration due to gravity
is 9.8 m/s2. What is your
weight on Uranus where
the acceleration due to
gravity is 8.69 m/s2?
