VOCABULARY

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS FOR THE ARTISTS
AND ARTISANS IN THE PHILIPPINES
The National Artist Award and the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) are two of the most prestigious awards given to
artists and artisans in the Philippines.
The National Artist Award is the highest national recognition given to individuals who have made significant contributions to
the development of Philippine arts and culture. It was first instituted in 1972 by then-President Ferdinand Marcos through
Proclamation No. 1001. The award is given in seven categories: Architecture, Dance, Film, Literature, Music, Theater, and Visual
Arts. A National Artist is conferred with the Order of National Artists, which is considered the highest national honor in the
Philippines. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) manages the selection process, and the President of the
Philippines confers the award.
The Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA), also known as the National Living Treasures Award, was created in 1992
by Republic Act No. 7355. It is given to master artists and traditional artisans who have demonstrated outstanding skills and
knowledge in their respective fields and who have helped preserve and promote Philippine traditional arts and culture. GAMABA
is managed by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and is awarded in various fields, including folk
architecture, weaving, pottery, carving, and more. Recipients of GAMABA receive a cash prize, a medallion, and a trophy.

1. Carlos "Botong" Francisco - He is a painter and muralist known for his masterpieces, such as "The First

literature. His notable works include "May Day Eve," "The Woman Who Had Two Navels," and "A

4. Lino Brocka - He is a filmmaker known for his socially relevant films. His notable works include

5. Levi Celerio - He is a composer and lyricist who wrote some of the most famous Filipino songs. His
notable works include "Ang Pipit," "Sa Ugoy ng Duyan," and "Lupang Hinirang."

3. Magdalena Gamayo - She is an Ilocano weaver known for her "abel" fabric, which is made using
traditional techniques and natural dyes. Her work has been exhibited in the Philippines and other
countries.
4. Federico Caballero - He is a Yakan weaver known for his intricate "pis siyabit" cloth, which is used
in traditional Yakan clothing. His work has been exhibited in the Philippines and other countries.
5. Masino Intaray - He is a B'laan artist known for his woodcarving and brass casting. His work has
been exhibited in the Philippines and other countries.

PREPRODUCTION

This stage involves planning and preparation before the actual production begins. It includes tasks such as:
• Scriptwriting and development
• Storyboarding and shot listing
• Casting actors and crew members
• Location scouting and set design
• Budgeting and scheduling
• Rehearsals and previsualization

The goal of preproduction is to ensure that everyone involved in the production is on the same page and has
a clear understanding of what is expected. This stage helps to minimize problems that may arise during
production and post-production.
PRODUCTION

This stage involves the actual filming or recording of the project. It includes tasks such as:
• Setting up cameras, lighting, and sound equipment
• Blocking and rehearsing scenes
• Recording and capturing footage or audio
• Directing actors and crew members
• Keeping track of continuity and shot lists
The goal of production is to capture the footage and audio necessary to create the final product. It's
important to have good communication and teamwork during this stage to ensure that everything goes
according to plan.
POST-PRODUCTION

This stage involves editing and finalizing the project. It includes tasks such as:
• Editing and assembling footage or audio
• Adding visual and special effects
• Color grading and sound mixing
• Adding music and other sound elements
• Exporting and delivering the final product

The goal of post-production is to refine the footage and audio captured during production and turn it into a
finished product that meets the desired standards. It requires technical expertise and attention to detail to
ensure that the final product is of high quality and meets the expectations of the audience.
