Safety Measures to
01 Observe in
Badminton
For Players and Officials
For the players
1. Wear the prescribed PE uniform.
2. Perform the appropriate warm-up
exercises before the start of the game.
3. Visualize the playing court in your head
so you know how to calculate your
movements.
Note that you will have your eyes focused to
the shuttlecock much of the time during
play.
For the Officials
1. Make sure that the playing court is
free of obstructions and
unnecessary materials.
2. As a line judge, be at least 0.5
meters away from the lines to avoid
getting hit.
3. Monitor all warm-ups.
02
Basic Concepts of
the Sport
Singles, Doubles and Service Error
At the start of a match, a toss coin decides who serves
first and which side of the net a player will initially
defend.
SERVICE
The server's racket
shall initially hit the
base of the
shuttlecock, while the
whole of the
shuttlecock is below
the server's waist.
GENERAL
PLAY
The shuttlecock is declared out of play if it fails
to cross the net or lands on the floor, or hits the
ceiling of the venues.

A rally is also lost if a fault is committed.

A fault is called if a player touches the net during
play with either body or racket, a player hits the
shuttlecock before it comes across the net
Singles
Singles
1. At the beginning of the game (0-0) and with the
server's score even, the server serves from the right
service court; with the server's score odd, the
server serves from the left service court.
Even – right service
(0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 , 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28,
30)
Odd – Left service
Singles
2. The shuttlecock is hit alternately by the
server and the receiver until a "fault" is
made or the shuttle ceases to be in play.
Singles
3. If the receiver makes a "fault" or the shuttlecock ceases
to be in play because it touches the surface of the court
inside the receiver's court, the server scores a point. The
server, then, serves again from the alternate service court.
Singles
4. If the server makes a "fault" or the shuttlecock ceases to
be in play because it touches the surface of the court inside
the server's court, the server loses the right to continue
serving and the receiver, then, becomes the server.
Doubles
Doubles
1. The service shall be delivered from the right service court:

a. at the start of the game,

b. with the serving side failing to score
c. with the serving side scoring an even number of points.
Doubles
2. Only the receiver shall return the service. It shall be a
"fault" if the shuttlecock is touched or the receiver scores a
point hit by the receiver's partner; thus, the serving side
scores a point.
Doubles
3. After the service is returned:

a. the shuttlecock may be hit by either player of the

serving side then by either player of the receiving side, and
so on, until the shuttlecock ceases to be in play

b. a player may hit the shuttlecock from any position

on that player's side of the net.
Doubles
4 The player who serves at the start of any game shall serve
from, or receive in:

a. the right service court when that player's side has not
scored or has scored an even number of points in that
game
b. b. the left service court when that player's side has
scored an odd number of points in that game.
Doubles
5. The player who receives at the start of any game shall
receive in, or serve from:

a. the right service court when that player's side has not
scored or has scored an even number of points
b. the left service court when that player's side has scored
an odd number of points.
Doubles
6. The reverse pattern shall apply to the
partners
Doubles
7. If the receiving side makes a "fault" or the
shuttlecock ceases to be in play because it touches
the surface of the court inside the receiving side's
court, the serving side scores a point and the server
serves again.
Doubles
8. If the serving side makes a "fault" or the
shuttlecock ceases to be in play because it touches
the surface of the court inside the serving side's
court, the server loses the right to continue serving.
A point is scored by the receiver.
Doubles
9. Either player of the winning side may
serve first in the next game, and either player
of the losing team may receive.
SERVICE
ERROR
SERVICE ERROR
1. A service error has been made when the player is:

A. serving out of turn,

b. serving from the wrong service court, and
C. standing in the wrong service court and preparing to
receive the delivered service.
SERVICE ERROR
2. If an error is discovered before the next service is delivered:

A. it shall be a "let" if the side that made an error won a rally,

b. the error shall not be corrected if the side that made an error
lost the rally, and
c. it shall be a "let" if both sides made an error.
SERVICE ERROR
4. If the service error is discovered after the next service has
been delivered:

a. the error shall not be corrected, or

b. the play in that game shall proceed without changing the
player's new service court.
Duties and
03 Responsibilities of
Officials
Duties and Responsibilities of Officials

1. The referee is the

overall-in-charge of
the tournament.
Duties and Responsibilities of Officials

2. The umpire reports to act under the authority of the referee or is

responsible to the officials in the absence of the referee.
When another official signaled, the umpire can make the decision.
When no decision can be given, a "let" is called.

The umpire is in charge of the court and its immediate surroundings.

The umpire's jurisdiction exists from his or her entering the court
before the match until his or her leaving the court after the match.
Duties and Responsibilities of Officials

3. The service judges are normally

appointed by the referee but can be
removed by the umpire in
consultation with the referee.
He or she shall call service faults
made by the server should they occur.
The official's decision within his or
her jurisdiction or area of concern is
final.
Duties and Responsibilities of Officials

4. The line judges are normally appointed by

the referee, but a line judge can be removed
by the umpire in consultation with the
referee.

Line judges sit on chairs in prolongation of

their lines at the ends and sides of the court,
and preferably at the side opposite the
umpire. A line judge is entirely responsible
for the assigned line(s).
Duties and Responsibilities of Officials

If the shuttlecock lands out of the

court, no matter how far, the line
judge should call "out" promptly in a
clear voice, loud enough to be heard
by the players and the spectators,
and at the same time, signal by
extending both arms horizontally so
that the umpire can see clearly.
Duties and Responsibilities of Officials

If the shuttlecock lands in

court, the line judge shall
say nothing but point to the
line with the right hand.
