RECALL: What is holistic health?
Holistic health is an
approach to wellness that
simultaneously addresses
the physical, mental,
emotional, social, and
spiritual components of
health.
What is global health?
Global health pertains to various health issues, concerns
and trends which go beyond national boundaries and call
for global initiatives for the protection and promotion of
peoples' health across the world.
- Ilona Kickbush (2009)
It is an area for study, research and practice that prioritizes
health improvement and achieving impartiality in
healthcare and wellness worldwide.
- Koplan and Associates (2009)
GLOBAL ISSUES
Global health is fluid and ever-changing, so there is no definitive list of global
health issues. A problem in one place in one year may not be a problem in the
same place the next year, or it may be a much bigger and widespread
problem. Plus, new global health concerns—such as the mpox (monkeypox)
outbreak of 2023—are always emerging and presenting new threats or
dangers. Some global health issues, however, such as cancer, air pollution, or
tuberculosis, are so consistent and long lasting as to seem ever present.
The WHO
Founded in 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) is
the United Nations agency dedicated to global health and
safety.
WHO works worldwide to promote health, keep the world
safe, and serve the vulnerable. Their goal is to ensure that a
billion more people have universal health coverage, to protect
a billion more people from health emergencies, and provide a
further billion people with better health and well-being.
The global health initiatives
The WHO made several health initiatives to prevent if not reduce the
prevelance of health problems:
• Stop TB
• Roll back malaria
• Global fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases
• Framework Convention for Tobacco control
• Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan
• Global Strategy to Reduce the harmful use of alcohol
• Global Strategy for the prevention and contol of non-
communicable diseases
• These health initiatives are programs or campaigns that
aim to promote health and prevent diseases. By knowing
about these initiatives, we can learn about the different
ways we can take care of our physical and mental health,
as well as prevent the spread of illnesses.
• Many countries don't have the capacity to respond
effectively to outbreaks and public health events like
environmental disasters. Training more people to respond
to global public health threats can help reduce negative
health outcomes.
