Region 1, also known as the Ilocos Region, is located
in the northwest of Luzon. It borders to the east the
regions of the Cordillera Administrative Region and
Cagayan Valley, and to the south of the Central
Luzon. Located on its west is the South China Sea.
LA UNION
The Surfing Capital of the North

La Union was carved from the nine towns of Pangasinan, three of


Ilocos Sur and villages of the Eastern Pais del Igorotes in the
Cordilleras. It was formally created by a Royal Decree issued by
Queen Isabela of Spain on April 18, 1854. The name La Union
indicates the union of towns from different provinces.

DINENGDENG FESTIVAL
A cultural, food, and religious festival in the city of
Agoo, La Union, Philippines in May 1st. Generally it
is a week-long festival.

BAGGAK FESTIVAL
Every month of April, the town of Bauang, La Union
comes alive to stage this colorful festival. Typically,
“Baggak” means “morning star,” and stands for the
dawning of a new day for Bauang. During this
event, it portrays the Ilocano spirit of unity and
diversity of culture.

Sillag is an Ilocano word that means “illumination
from the moon.” The two or three-day event
features light-inspired activities such as a
ceremonial lighting of Sillag Village, a musical show,
and lantern parade.

1. “ELYU” SAN JUAN BEACH, LA UNION
“Elyu” is a popular nickname for the town of San Juan in La
Union, Philippines. San Juan is known for its beautiful
beaches and world-class surf spots, making it a favorite
destination among surfers and beachgoers alike. In recent
years, San Juan has also become a hub for creative and
artistic communities, attracting artists, writers, and
entrepreneurs who have set up unique cafes, galleries,
and shops.

Gapuz Grapes Farm is a family-owned farm located in Bauang
, La Union, Philippines. The farm is known for its unique grape v
arieties, including the popular seedless “Delano” grapes and the
rare “Black Ruby” grapes. The farm offers visitors a chance to e
xperience grape picking and other farm activities, making it a fu
n and educational activity for families and friends.
The Gapuz Grapes Farm is open to the public from November
to May, which is the grape season in La Union.

The third biggest province in the whole Philippine Archipelago
derived its name from salt or “asin” in the vernacular. Owing to the
rich and fine salt beds which were the prime source of livelihood for
the province’s coastal towns, PanagASINan or “Pangasinan” which
means “where salt is made” came to be its name.

recognition of the invaluable work of farmers

1. CAPE BOLINAO LIGHTHOUSE
Built by Filipino, American, and British engineers in 1905,
Cape Bolinao Lighthouse is one of the five major
lighthouses in the Philippines and is the second-highest
of these five, bested only by Ilocos Norte’s Cape Bojeador
Lighthouse.

Located in Barangay C. Lichauco in Tayug, the Tayug
Sunflower Eco Park is a haven for those who can’t get
enough of flowers. Like its name suggests, the park is
home to thousands of flowers, but they’re not all
sunflowers. The main attraction in this park are the
sunflowers, which make for amazing photos.

Balingasay River in Bolinao is considered the cleanest
river in Pangasinan and one of the cleanest in the
Philippines. It is a protected area that is home to 15ha of
mangroves, some of which are over a century old. You
can swim, bird watch, or even try fishing in the river, but
one of the most relaxing ways to take it all in is through a
river cruise.

Bolinao Falls is made up of three waterfalls—Bolinao
Falls 1, 2, and 3. But don’t let the names fool you—they
may not sound spectacular, but they’re actually some of
the top Pangasinan tourist spots. Along with Patar
Beach, the three falls located in Barangay Samang Norte
along Bolinao River are the most visited places in
Bolinao.

Tondol White Sand Beach in the municipality of Anda has
been nicknamed “The Little Boracay of the North,” and
this monicker has made it one of the most visited
beaches near Manila. Like Boracay, one of the top beach
destinations in the Philippines, Tondol has long stretches
of fine white sand and clear blue waters.

Built in 1605, the church has seen millions of devotees
and thousands of religious folk still make a pilgrimage to
Manaoag every year, especially during the Holy Week.

The Pangasinan Hundred Island National Park in Alaminos is the


top Pangasinan destination for locals and international travelers
alike. The protected area boasts of 123 islets scattered across
Lingayen Gulf. Each islet is uniquely shaped and believed to
have been formed millions of years ago, making the view of
them even more special and rare. Some of the islands have
white sand beaches, while some feature limestone cliffs

Bacarra Town Fiesta is celebrated in honor of St. Andrew de


Apostle, the town’s patron saint. Bac-Bacarra Festival which
started in 2005 is a heritage that rekindled the love and passion
of Bacarra people to revive and preserve the richness of their
culture and traditions. The legendary word “bac-bacarra” is a
specie of freshwater fish abundant in the river during the 15th
century which gave birth to the town’s name

Baguinians celebrate in harmony and unify in thanksgiving to
God because of the Amian climate. Hence, the birth and the

Laoag City celebrates its annual fiesta on the 10th of February, the
feast day of Saint William the Hermit, its patron saint. It is an
affair which is primarily done to give honor, pay our homage and
extend our thanks for the benevolence and generosity of Saint
William. Through his intercession to the Lord, Laoag City has been
blessed and spared from calamities and disasters. The
Laoagueños await for and look forward to every celebration of
the city fiesta, making it an extension of the fun and the frolics of
the Christmas season.

The Paoay Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is worth
a visit when you go up north. The church, also known as the
San Agustin Church. It is built in the usual earthquake
baroque style, characterized by its wide base and massive
flying buttresses flanking its sides. Like most old churches in
the country, the exterior walls of Paoay Church are made
with large coral stones and bricks. The church’s facade is
also reminiscent of Javanese architecture bears a striking
similarity to the Borobudur temple in Indonesia.

2. BANGUI WINDMILLS
The Bangui Windmills are a long line of 70m-high wind
turbines lined up over a 9km stretch of the Bangui Bay
shoreline. Standing tall over the black sand beach, the
windmills make up the first wind farm in the country and
generate enough electricity to support 40% of the power
requirements of Ilocos Norte. There is no entrance fee to
the Bangui Windmills. There are a few souvenir stalls in the
area, so you might want to consider getting a little wooden
replica of a wind turbine as a souvenir.

Sand dunes of La Paz and Paoay, the natural coastal desert
shaped by sea and wind, are located along the coast near Laoag
City. Its rolling and sometimes steep slopes make it a perfect
place for a heart-pumping 4x4 ride and sandboarding. It’s one
of the top ATV tours in the Philippines. The best time to visit the
sand dunes is in the afternoon so that you can avoid the worst
of the sun's rays and be able to ride your 4x4 into the sunset

FORMATION
In the nearby town of Burgos, a hidden gem is waiting to be
discovered: the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. It is a natural
formation that juts out of the rock along the beach. Its name was
derived from the Ilocano word “puraw” meaning “white.”
The rock formation is known for its creamy white rock surface
sculpted and shaped by the relentless pounding waves.

This two-story-mansion-turned-museum was the former


holiday residence of the Marcos family. The home is done in
Spanish colonial style, with a large spacious living room
area, a grand staircase, and wide hallways. The museum
displays memorabilia and some personal effects of the
Marcos family.

6. SINKING BELL TOWER
About 85 meters away from the Laoag Church is the Sinking
Bell Tower. The bell tower was built in the 1600s by the
Augustinian friars, who did not immediately realize that it
was on sandy soil. Since its construction, the bell tower has
been sinking at a rate of about 1 inch per year. But despite
its slow descent into the underground (literally), the bell
tower still rings its bell every Sunday for mass.

One of the largest natural lakes in the province of Ilocos
Norte, Paoay Lake draws visitors not just because it’s right
beside the Malacañang of the North, but because of its
serene and calm beauty. The local legend says that the lake
used to be the site of a barangay called San Juan de
Sahagun, which sank after an earthquake and eventually
submerged the village. Today, Paoay Lake is a feeding stop
for migratory birds, and you can go birdwatching near its
banks.

• SINAIT GARLIC FESTIVAL
It happens during the 1st to 3rd of May that showcase the
talent, ingenuity and hard work trait of Ilocano Farmers in
various competition form. It is also known as the Sinait
Bawang Festival. The province-wide cooking contest is also
held side-by-side with the Search for the Biggest Garlic Bulb
and Garlic Bundling, whose categories include Longest
Twined Garlic, Creative Bundling, and Bundling Competition
which also allows tourist participation.

2. VIVA VIGAN FESTIVAL
Every first week of May, Vigan plays host to
visitors for this festival featuring painting and
product exhibits, a Calesa parade, and other
cultural activities.

The Longaniza Festival of Vigan City held every
January 22features the “longest Longaniza” with the
hope of entering to the Guinness Book of Records as
the longest Longaniza of the world. The Longaniza
plays a major role in promoting the identity of the city
as a major producer of Longaniza which s famous not
only locally but also abroad.
