SPEED, VELOCITY

AND
ACCELERATION
ACTIVITY 1
Jumbled letters will be flashed.
Try to identify the meaningful words based on
the jumbled letters.
1)

MOTION
2)

DISTANCE
2 is the value and km is the unit.
The most common unit for distance is km, m
and miles
3)

DISPLACEMENT
4)

TIME
5)

SPEED
6)

VELOCITY
7)

ACCELERATION
FORMULA

Speed = Distance/time
Velocity = Displacement/time
Acceleration =
final velocity-initial velocity
time taken
Speed,velocity and
acceleration
1) SPEED
-is a rate at which an object
travels in a certain distance.
(How fast did you reach a certain distance?)
Speed is a scalar quantity, has
magnitude but no direction.
The SI Unit of speed is the meter
per second (m/s), but the most common
unit of speed in everyday usage is the
kilometer per hour (km/h) or, in the US
and the UK, miles per hour (mph). For
air and marine travel, the knot is
commonly used.
Formula:

S = d/t
where s = speed
d= distance changing

t= time rate of
Formula:

S = d/t
where s = speed
d= distance changing

t= time rate of
Units :

Speed =meter per second = m/s

Distance= meter = m
Time= second = s
Sample Problem: Solution:

2s
S= d/t
10 m S= 10m/2s
S= 5m/s
TRIVIA……TRIVIA……TRIVIA…

In the problem above, what if

the unknown is d (distance)?
What formula are we going to
use?
TRIVIA……TRIVIA……TRIVIA…

How about if the

unknown is t (time)?
How are we going to
solve the problem?
TRY THESE!!!

Solve the following problems.

Show your solutions.
1. If a car travels 400m in 20
seconds how fast is it going?
2. If you move 50 meters in 10
seconds, what is your speed?
3. It takes Serina 0.25 hours to drive
to school. Her route is 16 km long.
What is Serina’s average speed on
her drive to school?
4. A plane travels 395,000 meters in
9000 seconds. What was its speed?
5. How much time will it take for a
bug to travel 5 meters across the
floor if it is traveling at 1 m/s?
6. You need to get to class, 200
meters away, and you can only walk
in the hallways at about 1.5 m/s. (if
you run any faster, you’ll be caught
for running). How much time will it
take to get to your class?
7. How far can you get away from
your little brother with the squirt
gun filled with paint if you can
travel at 3 m/s and you have 15s
before he sees you?
8. How far can your little brother
get if he can travel at 2.5 m/s and in
5 seconds you will discover that his
squirt gun has run out of paint?
9. If you shout into the Grand
Canyon, your voice travels at the
speed of sound (340 m/s) to the
bottom of the canyon and back, and
you hear an echo. How deep is the
Grand Canyon at a spot where you
can hear your echo 5.2 seconds
after you shout?
10. Suppose a truck travels 60
kilometer in first hour and 80
kilometer in second hour. What is
the average speed of truck?
