• Media products can be classified into categories or genre.
• Media genres appear within a medium (film, television) such as
the "horror" film or the television "situation comedy".
• Is a French word for “type or “kind”.

ROLE OF GENRE IN UNDERSTANDING
MEDIA MESSAGES

Genre helps audiences-readers and


viewers- to understand the text by merely
looking at those signs that you can recognize
and interpret.

✔ These are systems of signs, which create meaning.

Technical codes are all the ways in which


equipment is used to tell the story in a media
text, for example the camera works in a film.

Symbolic codes show what is beneath the surface


of what we see. For example, a character's
actions show you how the character is feeling.
