Simple Past Tense
 Itshows an action or state which happened at
specific time in the past.
(happened = started and finished)
 S + V2 + C.
 They were present last week.
 He painted his room yesterday.
 She baked a yummy cake last night.
Structure Tobe (was/were)
 Affirmative Structure
S + V2(Tobe: was/were) + C. They were absent yesterday.
 Interrogative Structure
Tobe (was/were)+ S + C? Were they absent
yesterday?
 Negative Structure
S + Tobe (was/were) + not + C. They were not absent
yesterday.
 Negative Interrogative Structure
Structure other verbs

 Affirmative Structure
S + V2+ C. The baby woke up at 5:30 this
morning.
 Interrogative Structure
Did + S + V1 + C? Did the baby wake up at 5:30 this morning?
 Negative Structure
S + did + not + V1 + C. The baby didn’t wake up at 5:30 this morning.
 Negative Interrogative Structure
Did + not + S + V1 + C? Didn’t the baby wake up at 5:30 this morning?
Examples

 The students were busy with their assignments yesterday.


 They were angry at you this morning.
I was nervous about the interview last week.
 We watched these movies last month.
 She lied to you last night.
 The judge dissolved the dispute an hour ago.
Usages
1. It is used to show an action that began and ended at a
particular time in the past.
 I visited Parwan last year.
2. It is used to indicate unreal situation with ‘if’ and ‘wish’.
 I wish that you passed the test.
3. It shows a repeated action. Ali always got angry at others.
4. It is used without time expression when listener and speaker
know about the time.
 Afghanistan won the match.

Past Continuous Tense

It is used to show an action that was in progress at a particular


time in the past.
The stated time is the continuation point not the starting point.
S + Tobe (was/were) + V-ing + C.
We were playing cricket yesterday at 3:00
pm.
She was washing the dishes last night at
10:00 pm.
Structure

 Positive: S + was/were + v-ing + Comp.


 Negative: S + was/were + not + v-ing + Comp.
 Positive Interrogative: Was/Were + S + v-ing + Comp?
 Negative Interrogative: Wasn’t / weren’t + S + v-ing + Comp?

Oral Exercise: Change the following sentences into negative and interrogative.
1. He was cleaning the house yesterday.

Usages
1. It is used to show an action that was in progress at a particular time in the
past. The stated time is the continuation point not the starting point.
 They were watching movie last night.
2. It is used to indicate an action which was in progress, but sometimes
interrupted by another action.

3. It shows two actions happen at the same time.
 Ahmad was speaking and writing English language.
