India’s Geopolitical and

Cultural Concerns
• India's ability to gain the same level of international recognition and respect as its western counterparts is
hampered by several geopolitical and cultural obstacles. The following are several justifications for the
aforementioned assertion:
 Colonial legacy and perception: India's view around the world has been shaped by its colonial past. India
continues to struggle with preconceived notions and stereotypes from the colonial era, even after achieving
independence in 1947. India may find it more difficult to be respected and accepted internationally if
democratic Western nations continue to see the country through the prism of its colonial past.(Tharoor 1947)
 Economic Disparities and Poverty: The enormous economic divide and pervasive poverty in India pose a
serious threat to its reputation abroad. India has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, but a
sizable portion of its people still lives in poverty. The continuation of poverty and economic disparity has
the potential to erode India's reputation and stature abroad.(The Political Economy of Development in India
n.d.)

and Perception
 Cultural and Religious Diversity: Although widely cherished at home, India's great cultural and religious
diversity may be seen as a problem outside. It might be challenging for foreigners to comprehend and
appreciate the subtleties of India's diverse cultural environment due to its complexity. Furthermore,
perceptions of instability and dissension can be influenced by religious tensions and disputes within India,
such as those between Muslims and Hindus. (“An Uncertain Glory_ India and its Contradictions
( PDFDrive.com )” n.d.)
 Geopolitical Conflicts and Regional Instability: India has formidable obstacles in gaining international
recognition and respect due to its geopolitical disputes and instability in the region. Rekindled hostilities with
China and Pakistan, as well as internal disputes like those in Kashmir, have the potential to overshadow India's
attempts to present itself as a dependable and stable partner on the international scene.(“Liberal Studies
Jouranl, Vol. 6, Issue 2 July - December 2021 29-7-22” n.d.)
• Challenges to Democratic Institutions: Even though India is still the largest democracy in the world, it
confronts many difficulties maintaining its democratic institutions, such as political division, corruption, and
restrictions on the right to free speech and expression. These problems are extremely worrying and could
harm India's democratic reputation. (Democracy under Siege FREEDOM IN THE WORLD 2021 Highlights from
Freedom House’s annual report on political rights and civil liberties n.d.)
