STYLES IN

PAINTING
(EXPRESSIONISM)
Expressionism

This was a European method that flourished in the first decade of the
twentieth century. In this method, artists have the freedom to consider
their personal style in presenting their subject or expressing their
thought or feelings.

An art in which the image of reality is distorted in order to make it

expressive of the artist's inner feelings or ideas.
These are various types of expressionism :
SYMBOLISM
• It is a thing or a single object that stands for another thing. A

flying dove for instance stand for freedom.

• Symbolist art shifted the emphasis from the direct

representation of nature to the world of the imagination.

Instead of describing something with precise, realistic detail or
stating facts they used personal metaphors and symbols,
evoking a meaning or feeling instead.
