Outcome Based Education

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is an approach to

education that focuses on specific learning outcomes or
skills that students should acquire by the end of a course
or program. Instead of solely focusing on teaching content
or completing traditional curriculam, educators design
their courses based on the desired outcomes or
competencies.

The idea is to ensure that students acquire the specific

knowledge, skills, and abilities that they will need to be
successful in their future careers or life. OBE encourages
active learning, critical thinking, problem-solving, and
promotes the development of lifelong learning skills.
OBE address the following key questions:
 What do we want the students to have or be able to do?
 How can we best help students achieve it?
 How will we know whether they students have achieved it?
 How do we close the loop for further improvement?
(Continuous improvement)
Benefits of OBE
 More directed & coherent curriculum.
 Graduates will be more relevant to industry & other
stakeholders ( more well rounded graduates)
 Continuous quality improvement is in place.

OUTCOMES (PSO’S)

COURSE OUTCOMES(CO’S)
 Department has initiated OBE process in the year
 Outcome based learning and teaching
 Brainstorming session at the beginning of every semester.
 Course coordinator will prepare course design, delivery
and assessment plan
Syllabus

CO- PO Mapping
 Lecture Schedule
Delivery Methods Assessment Planning
 Outcome based Assessment
 CIE & SEE
 CO PO Attainment with Gap analysis
Correlation between Course and Program
Outcomes
Each course has five course outcomes (COs) and it is
correlated with eight program outcomes (POs).

Courses
COURSE AND PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Curriculum is the primary means for achieving the POs.

The determination of which courses contribute to POs is done by
mapping the COs of each course with POs on a scale of 1 to 3.
Mapping strength between a CO and PO is established depending
on the relevance of the CO to the PO and the amount of time
dedicated to the PO.
This mapping us documented in form is known as Course
articulation matrix.
Based on the course articulation matrix, a program articulation
matrix is prepared which shows the strength of contribution of
each course to the POs.
Level of mapping between a Course ad PO is determined from
the average mapping strength of all the outcomes of the course to
the said PO.

 PROGRAMME OUTCOMES (POs)
 1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics,
science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization
to the solution of complex engineering problems.
 2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature,
and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated
conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and
engineering sciences.
 3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex
engineering problems and design system components or processes that
meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public
health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental
considerations.
 4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based
knowledge and research methods including design of experiments,
analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to
provide valid conclusions.
 5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern
engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities
with an understanding of the limitations.
 6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess
societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the
professional engineering practice.
 7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering
solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for
sustainable development.
 8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and
norms of the engineering practice.
 9. Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader
in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
 10. Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the
engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write
effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive
clear instructions.
 11. Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the
engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and
leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
 12. Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in
independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.
CO attainment process - Direct and Indirect
Assessment method
 CO attainment
1. Direct assessment.
2. Indirect assessment.
 Direct assessment (80%)
 CIE
 SEE
 Indirect Assessment(20%)
 Course end survey
Direct assessment evaluation pattern for course outcome
 CIE (30%)
 SEE (70%)
Assessment of CO attainment

 Questions in assessment tools (exams/ assessment) are

mapped to COs students scoring more than 60 % marks in
questions are considered to have attained the
corresponding CO.
 Fraction of students who scored 60 % marks in a question
taken as attainment through that question .
 Overall attainment of each co is taken as a weighted
average of attainment in all questions from the All
assessment tools, mapped to that CO.
 If students scored less than 50 % his / her attainment level
is 1.
 If students scored between 50% to 60% his/ her
attainment level is 2.
 If students scored more than 60 % marks his / her
attainment level is 3

Indirect Assessment

At the end of each semester a survey is conducted where

students are asked to what extent they are able to perform
the tasks articulated in COs of each course
Students respond in a 5 point scale:
1- Not at all 2- To a Small Extent 3- To a Very Large Extent

The attainment is calculated based on the student responses as:

CO Attainment = [(A*5+B*4+C*3+D*2+E1)*100] / (N*3)

(through indirect assessment)

Where A,B,C,D, E are the number of students choosing the

corresponding option for the CO and N is the total responses.
Current year CO attainment compared with the previous
year CO attainment.
 If the average co attainment value exceed than the
previous year CO attainment value we set new target set
for that particular CO.
 If the average CO attainment value is not exceed than the
previous year attainment values we are going to action
takens like conducting seminars, workshop for the
attainment of not attained CO.
