Community Immersion

Objectives
• Recognize the importance of community
immersion and building relationship with the
people in the community.
• Identify the benefits of doing community
immersion; and
• Understand what is community immersion.
Community
• A group of people with diverse characteristics who
are linked by social ties, share common perspectives,
and engage in joint action in geographical location or
setting.
Two Types of Community

• Geographical Community
• Functional Community
Geographical Community

• Defined as group of people living in the same


geographical location like in a certain village, town,
neighborhood district, area or territory.
Functional Community

• If the aggregate of people, though not necessarily based


on living in the same geographical location is bonded
by a common end such as fighting for the same cause.

• Demographics/characteristics of the population
• History
• Understanding the economy, culture and community
structures
Demographics/characteristics of the
population

• Tell about the movement of the population in the


community that you will serve.
History
• Events of the past that contributed to the development
of the community.
Understanding the economy,
culture and community structures
Economy consists of the economic systems of a country
such as labor , capital and land resources.
Culture refers to ways of living of the people.
• Structures include physical, political and social
structures.
Community Immersion
It is an essential strategy in community organizing
work that entails better understanding of the different
community concerns, process , dynamic and lifestyle
through exposure and engaging in different activities
• This gives them opportunity to reflect on their
assumptions , attitudes and to gain knowledge in
cultural diversity.
Benefits of Community Immersion
• Home visits
• Living with selected families preferably with informants
• Informal discussions with individuals or group
• Sharing in household and community activities
• Attendance in school gatherings
• Assistance in production work
What you should and should
not do in community
immersion
Before the conduct of community
immersion
Familiarized with the basic information and theories
regarding community life.
Secure a waiver from the NSTP office prior to the visit
and have it signed by your parents.
• Always inform faculty in-charge of your
destination , time table and plan of action.
Be alarmed with background information about the area for
information.
Pay courtesy to all community leaders whether formal or informal
Secure documents like a letter of acceptance from the community
• Bring your own personal provisions like water, snacks and
clothes.
During the Community Immersion

Be courteous to everyone.
Act properly and discreetly
• Wear proper uniforms and identification card
It is highly advised to keep your valuable secured
Always document your visit
• Always ask for permission from concerned people
when you have to take pictures
After the Community Immersion

Validate and evaluate if the programs and activities were


appropriately as planned.
• Provide copies of your final documentation output to
the NSTP office and to the community where you
conducted your immersion for records purposes.
Why would trainees need to study the behavior of the people in which
composed the community of which they serve?

• Young people are vested with the obligation “to defend the security of the
state and in fulfillment thereof, the government may require each citizen
to render personal military or civil service” (RA No. 9163, Section 2
otherwise known as NSTP Act of 2001) whether in times of peace or
war.
