What is empathy?
 It is to see with the eyes of another, hear with
the ears of another and feel with the heart of
another.
 It refers to putting oneself in the shoes of

another person to see things from their


perspective.
 For e.g. using phrases like “I see you’re

struggling with that. Can I offer a hand?” is a


display of empathy.
Types of empathy
 Cognitive: Simply knowing how the other
person feels and what they might be thinking.
 Emotional: When you feel physically along

with other person, as though their emotions


were contagious. E.g. being happy on
someone's achievements.
 Compassionate: With this kind, we not only

feel another persons’ condition but are


spontaneously moved to help, if needed.
How to develop empathy?
It can be developed by:
 Being non-judgmental.
 Showing genuine concern for others.
 Actively listening to others limitation to it is

our busy lives nowadays.


To add on, it requires a lot of practice and
effort.
Signs of an empathetic person

 Other people come to you for advice.


 You often feel overwhelmed by tragic events.
 You try to help others who are suffering.
 You care deeply about other people.
Importance of empathy in building
relationships
 Understanding others’ joy and sorrows
creates a sense of belonging which helps
build strong relationships
 Moreover, by empathizing with the emotions

of others, we can find common ground and


resolve conflicts more effectively.
 Example: Offering genuine consolation after

hearing about a friend’s tough day at work.


Importance of empathy in building
relationships
 Understanding the feelings of one another
creates a space where individuals feel valued
and understood.
 Communication can be made more effectively

and misunderstandings can be avoided.


 We can bridge gaps in communication

through cultivating empathy.


 These factors in return, help build

relationships
 Empathy is not only confined to personal
relationship building but play a significant
role in constructing professional relationships
too.
 Interpreting how our clients, colleagues and

customers would feel due to any decision


would help create a strong bonding making
them able to work together as a team more
efficiently and assist a person become an
effective leader, team member.
 Showing empathy is an important way to
build strong relationships and be a good
friend . Ultimately, people feel less alone
when they know you understand their
perspective, and that's what empathy is all
about.
Challenges
 While empathy is very beneficial, it can also
be challenging.
 It can be difficult to balance empathy and

objectivity and to avoid being overwhelmed


by others’ emotions.
 Being open to others can be difficult for many

people.
Conclusion
 Empathy is an enormous tool for building
strong and meaningful relationships.
 It helps a person to improve personal and

professional relationships as it fosters trust


and understanding.
 It accompanies some challenges but it would

not be wrong to say that empathy is the


backbone of building long-lasting and
healthy relationships.
