EMPOWERING WASTE COLLECTION:

DEVELOPING A HUMAN-ASSISTED
ROBOTIC SOLUTION FOR HUMAN
GARBAGE DISPOSAL
CHAPTER 1: PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
The Philippines is a developing nation in Asia. It is the currently the 12th biggest
nation in the world. This is clearly the case. The nation is quite assertive when it comes to
economic expansion led to the production and use of many items. This results in the
production of several wastes. The effects of climate change is caused by economic
expansion environmental deterioration (Yukalang et al., 2017). An estimated 0.7 kg of
weight per person per day exceeds 8,000 in Metro Manila, tons of waste are produced
daily. Additionally, it is shown in the study that the primary source of waste (74%) and the
household's 95% solid trash can be be recycled, composted, or used again (JICA, 2019).
In response to this pressing challenge, the integration of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) into waste collection systems has emerged as a
promising solution. These technologies offer the potential to revolutionize waste disposal processes, making them more efficient, cost-effective, and
environmentally sustainable. The problem this study tried to address was the collection and management of waste with the use of robots. Robots can
safeguard the environment and maintain a tidy, sanitary neighborhood. (Chandra et al.,2021)

CHAPTER 1: PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
SCOPE AND LIMITATION
This study focuses on developing a human-assisted robotic solution
specifically tailored for human garbage disposal. The research will primarily
concentrate on the design, and evaluation of the robotic system within controlled
human environments.
The limitations of the study may vary in different geographical locations
and landfill settings. The development of certain advanced functionalities within
the robotic system may be limited by technological capabilities and resources.
Legal and ethical frameworks governing the deployment of robotics in waste
management may influence the implementation and scalability of the solution.
CHAPTER 1: PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The development of a human-assisted robotic solution for human garbage disposal holds significant implications for waste collection
practices, environmental sustainability, and public health. By harnessing the power of robotics and AI, this research aims to find its
significance to:
MUNICIPALITIES AND WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITIES.
- The research could provide them with innovative solutions to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize the environmental
impact of waste disposal.
ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS.
- Groups dedicated to environmental conservation and sustainability would be interested in our research as it offers potential solutions
to reduce pollution and mitigate the harmful effects of improperly managed waste.
TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES.
- Companies specializing in robotics and automation could find value in our research by exploring opportunities to develop and
commercialize robotic solutions for waste management.
GENERAL PUBLIC.
- Ultimately, improved waste management practices benefit everyone by preserving the environment, reducing health risks, and
promoting sustainability. The general public could benefit from our research through cleaner surroundings and healthier living conditions.
CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

Waste management is a global concern, especially in India, where improper garbage disposal poses risks to
safety, hygiene, and public health. Manual trash collection persists despite drawbacks like labor shortages and
safety hazards. While autonomous waste collection equipment may have high upfront costs, they often reduce
maintenance expenses. Before developing solutions, it's crucial to understand the need for a small, affordable,
and scalable system by reviewing existing research. Various prototypes, including trash segregators and self-
governing robots, have been explored. A mobile robot designed for beach cleanup, equipped with a shovel,
trash can, solar cell, IP camera, and Bluetooth module, offers an eco-friendly solution. (Shaik, 2023)
The collection and management of waste using robot assistance was the issue this research attempted to
solve. Robots can help preserve a clean, hygienic community and protect the environment. Litter that is
present in multiple manifolds at various sites is a serious problem. To create a robot capable of doing this kind
of work, an eclectic approach was adopted; the various concepts they suggested, as well as the range of
completed models and prototypes that had already been constructed, were thoroughly examined. (Chandra et
al.,2021)
CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

Before offering a detailed explanation of our own answer and in order to comprehend the need for a more compact,
economical, and adaptable framework, we must first examine the prior studies and research conducted in the area. As a result,
a wide range of research articles were examined in this area in order to gather pertinent data on the project. Using wireless
connection, Sirichai Watanasophon and Sarinee Ouitrakul (Watanasophon et al., 2014) built a garbage pickup robot for the
beach. The mobile robot system is made up of a Bluetooth module for wireless connection and an IP camera that provides the
user with a live feed. The autonomous trash collector bot developed by Khandar et al. (2018) will be based on a Raspberry
Pi. All that the image processing method does here is determine whether or not the thing is an animal. A wirelessly operated
garbage collecting robot was proposed by Kamal et al. (2017). A web application may be used to construct a software that
allows the user to operate a robot. The robot was only ever tested using Proteus simulations; actual ground testing was never
done. Because no attempts were made to replicate real-world situations or obstacles, it might not be trustworthy for someone
wishing to test. (Prabha et al., 2018) created the Robodumpster, an autonomous waste collection. The robot features a
wirelessly controllable arm with seven degrees of freedom. The only characteristic employed in this trash sorting process is
the object's width, hence there is no accuracy. Due to the human fabrication process, the 7DoF arm is a costly technology
that is not cost-effective.
CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN

A descriptive-quantitative research approach will be used for the

investigation. With the use of robotic materials, the researchers want to
create a Human-Assisted Robotic Solution for Human Garbage Disposal.
The three instances for conservation on robots—energy efficiency,
material selection, and resource conservation—will be carried out by the
researchers using a self-trial experiment. To find out how teachers feel
about the Human-Assisted Robotic Solution for Human Garbage Disposal
in terms of (a) ease of use, (b) mobility, (c) portability, (d) replicability,
and (e) durability, a survey instrument rubric will also be created.
CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH SETTING

Data collection for the assessment of the Human-Assisted

Robotic Solution for Human Trash Disposal will take place at
Christian Samaritan Health Services and Technical School Inc.
Divisoria Campus located at Tirso Neri - Pabayo Street, Divisoria
Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, is a private school that was
founded in 2006. To evaluate the robot, a five-point Likert scale will
be employed. Five (5) teachers from the school's staff may serve as
responders or assessors for this study, based on their availability and
consent to participate.
CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY
RESPONDENTS AND SAMPLING SCHEME

The researchers will utilize convenience sampling using the

Likert Scale survey, and five (5) randomly selected teachers from
Christian Samaritan Health Services and Technical School Inc.

point Likert scale survey-questionnaire with the following criteria: (a) ease of use, (b)
mobility, (c) portability, (d) replicability, and (e) durability. The data will be analyzed using
mean for central tendency and standard deviation for variability to construct the descriptive
statistics of the Likert responses. The following will be the scale of the responses:
