What is IoT?
The internet of things (IoT) is a
system of interrelated computing
devices, mechanical and digital
machines, objects that are provided
with unique identifiers (UIDs) and
the ability to transfer data over a
network without requiring human-
to-human or human-to-computer
interaction.
IoT Devices
IoT devices are smart devices which have support for internet
connectivity and are able to interact with the other devices over the
internet and grant remote access to a user for managing the device as
per their need.

Examples: Home security setups, activity trackers, Smart Farming,

Industrial security and safety, Motion detection.
Industrial Revolution
Industrial Internet of Things
(IIoT)
IIoT or Industry 4.0 is the use of IoT to enhance manufacturing and
industrial processes. This uses sensors, actuators, wireless networks,
big data, AI, data analytics to measure and optimise the industrial
processes. In manufacturing, IIoT has a potential for quality control,
supply chain traceability and overall supply chain efficiency,
sustainable and green practices. IIoT is key to processes such as
Predictive Maintenance, energy management and asset tracking.
IoT use cases in
Manufacturing
1. Remote Monitoring of Production
2. Quality Control
3. Predictive Maintenance
4. Safer Work Environment
5. Workforce Efficiency
6. Remote Monitoring of Production
Remote Monitoring of
Production
By embedding sensors in production equipment, rates of production
can be remotely monitored with respect to inputs. By analysing these
inputs, input-output ratio can be optimised. Given the current scenario
and pandemic, remote monitoring helped the businesses to maintain
their production.
Quality Control

Detecting an issue at the first stage of production is much better than

identifying it at later stages as it reduces time and cost wastage. IoT
helps in identifying errors at various levels of the supply chain
enabling warnings. IoT also helps in adjusting the environmental
conditions or process parameters according to the deviation in the
output. IoT also helps in post production storage.
Predictive Maintenance

Predictive Maintenance is performed by evaluating the health and

performance of equipment through periodic or continuous asset
condition monitoring. Data captured by IoT devices connecting
different assets and systems enable businesses to predict, plan and take
proactive steps for any events like failure or repair. Predictive
maintenance is performed while the equipment is performing under
normal conditions to avoid disruptions and save time.
Safer Work Environment

IoT helps in creating healthier and safer environments for everyone

involved. HVAC sensors can be installed in the production plant to
ensure healthy air quality. Sensors can be installed to detect any
deviation in temperature out of the optimum range. Any accidents that
can occur due to any failure of any machine can be detected way
before using IoT and saves the workers.
Workforce Efficiency

Working environment affects an employee’s productivity. Using IoT,

environment conditions can be modified with maximum energy
savings. IoT-enabled building systems offer real-time location
information of employees and others in the facility. Such data makes it
easier to track employee movement and allocate work efficiently.
Impact of IoT in
Manufacturing
1. Improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness
2. Asset Performance Management
3. Optimising supply chain logistics
Overall Equipment Effectiveness

Overall Equipment Effectiveness is a measure of plant’s efficiency.

Equipment availability gets affected due to failure and maintenance.
So, Plant Maintenance Function has to ensure highest availability and
almost zero downtime of manufacturing plants. By collecting
maintenance data and using IoT, maintenance costs can be brought
down by 30% to 35%.
Asset Performance Management

As the utilisation of asset improves, operational cost reduces. IoT

provides effective solutions for asset tracking and collects various
operational and health parameters inside and around the asset.
Additional data with external parameters will assist in-depth analysis
and higher utilisation of asset can be achieved. This could emerge as a
different business model.
Optimising Supply Chain Logistics

Any cost saving or productivity gain in logistics and warehouse

operations reflects on the costs. IoT solutions integrated with Transport
Management System provide vehicle visibility and improve planning
to optimise vehicle usage. Early maintenance prediction improves
uptime leading to early movement of goods, and timely delivery to
customer site.
Challenges of
IoT
1. Large Investment needs and uncertainty about Return of
Investments.
2. Data Security and storage issues
3. Lack of Qualified Employees
4. Integration with operational technologies
5. Connectivity Outages
