Background of the Study
 OBN Salale FM radio 95.4 is the researcher subject under discussion.
 Which found in North Shewa Zone & conducted in Salale University which is located in Fitche town.
 Which is 114.7km far from the capital city of Ethiopia that of Addis Ababa.
 It conducted at Salale FM radio 95.4 specifically Sport News Journalists.
 It is controlled by Oromia Mass Media Agency & established in November 29,2021.
 It is Inform, Educate and Entertain the society in Afan Oromo.
 The station has four departments: News, Educational, Informational and Entertainment desks.
 Sport Program is one of the entertainment desk station departments.

Statement of the Problem
 OBN Salale FM radio 95.4 the content and coverage of the sport program more focuses on
international sport news motivating.
 National sport news would help for national development. As far as researcher would be
going to do the concern of the audience because they are eager to listen about local and
national sport news.
 For this reason, researcher going to assess the content of the sport program of OBN Salale
FM radio 95.4.

Objective of the Study
I. General Objective
 To assess and analyze the content of sport program OBN Salale FM radio 95.4.
II. Specific Objective
 To assess the extent to which international, national and local news are covered in the daily sport
news.
 To figure out the type of sport contents that are given more coverage on the daily sport program.

Methodology
 The Methodology of the study is contain:-
 How the data or raw information is gathered for the research?
 What methods are applied to collect data interns of interview and content assessment?
Research Design
 To address the designed objectives, the researcher would use a cross-sectional design.
 Cross sectional research design involves the collection of data at a single point in time.
 Therefore, in this study, the researcher would employ a cross-sectional research design.
 Since, the data regarding the Sport programs among OBN Salale FM radio 95.4 would be collected
at one point in time from the target population, taking into account the time and cost of
undertaking the study.
Research Approach
 Three kinds of methodological approaches such as qualitative, quantitative and
mixed/triangulated approaches can be applied to research.
 Qualitative approach is to be inductive, interpretative, and natural.
 It is assumed of having emphasis on process and meanings rather than on measures of

quantity, intensity and frequency.
 However, the main weaknesses of qualitative method are:-
 It tends to be subjective difficult to replicate and
 The method is not good for generalization and predictions.

 For the reason that it allows the researchers to collect both quantitative and
qualitative data simultaneously allowing for perspectives.
 In connection to this mixed method such as both quantitative and qualitative

method would be used to collect, analyze and interpret the data.
 The reason behind why the researchers selected both qualitative and
quantitative data collection method is to obtain both statistical and conceptual
data in order to increase clarity.

Sampling Methods and Sample Size
 Sampling Methods
 Sampling refers to the process of selecting a small number of study units from among defined
study population.
 They can be used to make estimates about the whole group.

 Researcher used non probability sampling techniques special purposive sampling techniques.
 Specifically, for the journalists who are reporters of sport news .
 Sample Size
 In this journalist the sample size determination formula would not be used because of the
population size selected is small.
Methods of Data Collection and Tools
 In this study, I would use interview methods of data collection.
 The reason behind using structured interview because to acquire detail information about
the sport program among OBN Salale FM radio 95.4.
 Source of Data
 This study would be collected from primary and secondary data collection instruments
such as primary and secondary data collection methods.
 In primary data the researcher would provide open ended and close ended question to
gather relevant and precise information from the respondents regarding the issue under the
study.

Interview
 The main goal of interview in the context of media program content analysis research.
 To understand and

 Sport department to know how they produce program specifically this concerned with how
they choose issues to their discussion program, news and live coverage .

Methods of Data Analysis and presentation
 Research method is analyzed by Qualitative and Quantitative Research methods.
 In Qualitative Research method:-

 It is more focused on how people feel, what they think and why they make certain choices.
 Inductive process is used to formulate theory or hypothesis.
 More subjective.
 Shortly it is text-based.
 Involves data collection procedure result primarily on open ended, non-numerical data.
 It uses flexible or semi structured questioning approach.

 Deductive process used to test pre-specified concepts and hypothesis that make up a
theory.
 More objective.
 Provides observed effects interpreted by researcher of a program on its problem.
 Shortly it is number based.
 Emphasize objective measurements through questionnaire and surveys.
 The researcher used a mechanism to classify the data based on content of sport activities
and coverage of geographical area (international, national and local news coverage).
Results and Discussions
 Data analysis, interpretation and presentation
 The collected data through interview have been analyzed, interpreted and presented by
using table, frequency and percentage.
 The data were collected from the in-depth interview in form of qualitative analysis and
 The content assessment based on the information get from morning news recording in
form of quantitative analysis.

 The stations morning sport news football news rather than other sport news coverage.
 The morning sport news is focused more times on football news which includes game
fixture, transfer, monthly awards and gossip.
 Athletics were held where Ethiopian athletes won the race. For example, Ottawa marathon
was held on February 29/2024.

 The highest attention for International news coverage (58.33%) and 56.67% of the air-time
duration-wise. Most of the airtime is for European countries league games, fixtures, result, transfer
news and gossip.
 Regional sport news item for the specific period is 25% and the air-time amounts to 23.33% while
the national sport news item is 16.67% and its air-time amounts to 18.33%. The Regional sport item
and air-time is more than the National sport news.
 The National news items include Ethiopian primer league news fixtures and result, national team
current qualification games, under 20 and under 17 year competition .

 The stations sport news contents does not indicate a major variation.
 Among the football sport contents the number of items the highest percentage is
33.33% for sport results and the largest airtime [37%] is given for transfer news as well.

 The number of items for match result news and transfer news together contain 7 news
items from the total 12 news item of the specified time period.
 In terms of the time duration transfer news covered 37% compared to result news [31%],
fixture news [17%], gossip covered [15%].
 Other type of football news such as entertainment, obituary get the chance to cover is the
lowest in both numbers of items in a week [8.33%] and air time duration [10%] in a week
of sport time.

Qualitative Analysis
 One way of strengthening this research is by having an interview with the
stations/salale FM 95.4 sport program journalists.
 During the in-depth interview the following questions were raised.
 Why do some sport issues get more coverage?
 How do sport journalists choose issues for the daily morning bulletin?
 Is there any document or guidelines that the sport desk section follows with relative
to program content?

 The interview was held on Feb 1, 2024 in OBN salale FM radio 95.4 sport department room with 3
journalists.
According to Geri Lemma:-
 for the morning bulletin fulfills the elements of news specifically that of timeliness.
 To select sport news is that of human interest, which in case of sport, people are attracted to
football or athletics.
 To focus on youth sport projects to create Suitable ways to the younger generation who want to
participate in different sport activities.

Another journalist from the sport department:-
 The focus of the sport program much on international sport activity is the limited number of
sport journalists in the station.
 It is difficult to gather information related to sport activity at a country level with the limited
number of journalists.
 But, it is simple to cover international sport activity because journalists get the information
through internet & satellite from different international media.
According to Gemachis Zewdu:-
 The station especially held in February & March, 2024 was given full coverage with almost
90% of the air time allotted to the local coverage.
Conclusion and Recommendation
Summary of findings
The result of the study from the assessment of the sport radio program and from the in-
depth interview can be summarized as follows:
 The researcher classified the program to show their content depending on

geographical area coverage and the type of sport content.
 The assessment shows that the sport program gives the majority of the time for
international sport.
 The other finding is that there is focus only on football issues and failing to remember
other sport activities that are held in our country and abroad.
Conclusion
 Indeed, the quality and content of the sport program can be improved based on
 The viewer feedback,
 By watching other competitive media,
 By preparing house style for the sport department.
 But, currently when the program is put in some words or explanation it looks like: 70% of
the total coverage is about international sport.
 The content of the sport activity, almost 100%, is football.

Recommendation
 Based on the study finding, the following recommendations are forwarded:
 The program producers:-

 Should have to give much time for local sports because the younger generation could
get international sport competitions on social media in a fraction of minutes. Hence,
it would be better to the audience to get local sport news from main stream media.
 Must try to include in their news coverage all news type of football news and don’t
spend their air time only by announcing game results and game fixtures.
