What is PPE?

•Personal protective equipment (PPE)


refers to equipment designed to protect
the wearer from injury or the spread of
infection or illness.
PPE INCLUDES:
• GLOVES
• GOWN
• Mask
• Goggles or face shield
• Head cap
• Shoe cover
THE USE OF PPE
1. Gloves
• Gloves are to be worn when there is a risk of exposure to:

 blood

 body fluids

 hazardous substances

 non-intact skin

 contaminated items or surfaces.

Hand washing is to be performed after gloves are removed.


2. GOWN
a. These are used in the following situations:

i. Looking after infected patients.

ii. Performing procedures where spill / splash / aerosols are


expected.

(e.g.: bronchoscopy, suctioning, etc.).

b. They are to be removed immediately once a task is finished and

not to be worn while moving to a different patient / area.


SURGICAL GOWN DONNING

Select appropriate size, type and


opening is in the back.

Hold the gown away from the body,


Put both hands into armholes. and
allow it to unfold completely.

Secure at neck and waist.


3.MASK
a. Masks are used in the following situations:
 If there is a risk of transmission of infection by droplets / aerosols

(e.g.: Patients with pulmonary TB, H1N1, etc)


 When a sterile procedure is undertaken

(e.g.: surgery, CVC line insertion).


 If an aerosol generating procedure is performed

(e.g.: bronchoscopy, suctioning, etc).

b. Masks are to be removed once a task is finished. They are not to be worn
when moving to a different patient care area.
N-95 MASK
• Hold the respirator in one hand, Be
sure the top and bottom straps of
the respirator are hanging down
and are not tangled or twisted.

• Place it over your nose, mouth,


and under the chin.
• First, take the top strap of the respirator and
place it on top of your head, above the ears.

• Then take the bottom strap of the


respirator and place it around the
bottom of the head, just below the
ears. The straps rest on the head and
are NOT overlapping or tangled.
Seal test for N-95 Respirator

• This is performed to check if you


donned the respirator correctly or
not.
How to Doff (Take off) an N-95 Respirator

• Grasp the BOTTOM strap of the mask


and lift it over the head.

• Then grasp the TOP strap of the mask


and lift it over the head

• Perform hand hygiene


4.Goggles / face shield:

• These are used if there is a risk of


splashing during a procedure.
5.Head cap:

Caps are worn in the operation


theatre and critical care areas. They
are worn if a sterile procedure is
being performed in the ward (e.g.:
Central line insertion). They are not
to be worn when moving to a
different patient care area.

• Scrubs
• Wash hands

• Wear respirator mask-fluid resistant

• Latex gloves (Inner)

• Goggles

• Disposable coverall/gown-non penetrating for blood and body fluids

• Face-shield

• Shoe cover – non penetrative

• Latex gloves( outer )
