Introduction

Addiction is the habitual physiological, psychological dependence on a substance or


practice which is beyond voluntary control. A person who is habituated to a substance or
a practice, especially a harmful one, is called on addict. Addiction is a chronic,
progressive and sometimes fatal disorder with both genetic and environmental roots. It
manifests as a compulsion that derives an individual to continue to behave in a waythat
is harmful to self and loved ones. Despite an intense desires to halt that behavior. It is a
disease of ‘more’- an active addict needs an increasing amount of substance to get high
and is unable to cease usage without painful withdrawal symptoms.
It is wise to stay away from alcohol and drug addiction. But if a person is
addicted to them, he/she should gradually give up on these habits as sudden
discontinuation can lead to ‘withdrawal syndrome’. In such a case, the person
suffers extreme anxiety, diarrhea, tightness in the chest, sweating, difficulty in
breathing, shivering and becomes fidgety.
‘In this project we will study the drug and alcohol
abuse, effects of drug and alcohol abuse and how to
prevent it and treatment’.
What is drug and alcohol abuse?
Drug abuse is a serious public health problem that affects almost every community and family in some ways.
Each year drug abuse causes millions of serious illnesses or injuries. Abused drug include the use of:

Heroin
• Alcohol
• Cocaine
• Nicotine
• Marijuana
• Club drugs
• Anabolicsteroids
The term addiction is defined as a chronic relapsing disorder characterized
by compulsive drug seeking and use despite adverse consequences. It is
considered a human brain disorder, because it involves functional changes
to brain circuits involved functional changes to brain circuits involved in
reward, stress,and self-control, and those changes may last a long time
after person stopped taking drugs.Drugs and alcohol abuse are addictive
substances once a person falls prey to their abuse, it is not easy to get rid or
refrain oneself. Their addiction and dependence could produce serve
outcomes.
Alcohol and drug abuse is a very common problem that
our society is facing today.
Effects of addiction

• Immediate physical effects might result in extreme rough behavior. However, a very
high dosage might lead to death in extreme cases.
• A person suffering from alcohol or drug abuse commonly become dull, antisocial,
depressed, tired, aggressive, etc.
• Intravenous drug consumption might lead to the transmission of the many infectious
diseases like a AIDS if the same syringe is shared among multiple people.
• Alcohol usage ultimately leads to the failure of vital organs like the liver and kidneys.
• In females alcoholism will usually stop menstruation or disrupt it.
• Alcoholics have a much higher risk of developing several cancers, including cancer of
the mouth,esophagus, liver, colon, rectum, breast, prostate and pharynx.
Prevention and control

• “Prevention is better than cure”


• Drug and alcohol abuse are more during young age and adolescence. The remedial
measure should be taken in time. The following measures would be particularly useful
for prevention and control of alcohol and addiction during adolescents.

• Avoid under peer pressure.


• Education and counseling.
• Seeking help from parents and peers.
• Looking for danger signs.
• Seeking professional and medical helps.
Treatment

• Do it yourself: experts say about 30% of people with an alcohol problem


manage to reduce their drinking or abstain without seeking professional
help.There is a great deal of material in books and the internet that may
help the self-helper.
• Counseling: a qualified counselor can help the user talk through his/her
problems and then devise a plan to tackle the drinking. CBT (cognitive
behavioral therapy) is commonly used to treat alcohol dependency.
• Detoxification: the patient takes some medication to prevent withdrawal
symptoms (delirium tremens) which many alcoholics experience when they
give up drinking .
Conclusion
Drug and alcohol is the use of drugs and alcohol over a long period and to such an
extent that it negatively affect the person’s physical, mental, and social life. It is
characterized by the inability to control or abstain from drug use despite its
harmful consequences or keeping drug use over a long period despite adverse
effects.
A person who has an addiction to drug and alcohol experiences strong desires for
having drugs, regardless of the consequences. They continue seeking and using the
drugs despite experiencing adverse effects, and such people are considered as
addicts.
There are many causes of drug addiction: genetics, trauma, personal experiences,
social environment, etc.
