THEME: THE HUAPO COLORADO

•The red huapo, also known as the red uácari, is distinguished by its reddish, hairless face. They
live in trees in periodically swamped areas and feed on fruits, seeds, insects, and small animals.
During the day, they roam in small groups searching for food, but at night, all the members of the
family gather together to sleep. A typical group usually consists of about 50 individuals.
His characteristic feature is his bald head and his reddish
•g face free of hair.

It weighs between 2.75 and 3.45 kg, while the length of the
body and head in male’s averages 45.6 cm and 44 cm in

It has well-developed fangs for opening thick shells.

It presents an irregular distribution in the Amazon,

FEATURES between the Yavarí and Ucayali rivers.

Its favorite habitat is the aguaje palm trees (Mauritia

flexuosa).

They can live up to 20 years.

They mate between October and May, when the female

attracts the male using olfactory stimuli.
REPRODUCTION:

•ACCORDING TO A STUDY CARRIED OUT IN BRAZIL, AMAZONAS FONTE BOAN.

• THEY MATE BETWEEN OCTOBER AND MAY.

•FEMALES CAUSE EVERY 2 YEARS, GENERALLY 1 ONLY CRIA.

•WHEN THE FEMALE ATTRACTS THE MALE USING OLFACTORY STIMULI.

FEEDING:

•They feed on seeds, fruits, leaves, flowers and some insects and live in the
treetops of the swampy areas of the Amazon, in Brazil and Peru. The red HUAPO
normally lives from fifteen to twenty years, but these days its future is
threatened and it is in danger of extinction.
BEHAVIOR AND CUSTOMS:

• The red huapo is an arboreal species that lives mainly in the flooded forest of
the Amazon Basin. They live in groups of 5 to 55 members that cover an area of
up to 600 hectares. They mate between October and May, when the female
attracts the male using olfactory stimuli. Females conceive at intervals of two
years and generally give birth to one calf, which is weaned between 3 and 5
months of age.
CONSERVATION:

• The red uacari is considered a vulnerable species due to a 30% population decline over the last
30 years from hunting and habitat loss. Between 1980 and 1990, an estimated 154 million
hectares of Amazon rainforest were destroyed annually, primarily by the timber industry,
impacting the uacaris' arboreal lifestyle and seed-based diet. Their populations, mainly in the
Amazon River bed, face increased hunting risks for food and bait.
LOCATION:

• The red uacari is a highly specialized species found near the Yavari Mirin River
on the Peru-Brazil border. Its bright red face indicates good health and a
balanced diet of seeds, fruits, flowers, and insects. They live in family groups,
with males often leaving to form new groups. The uacari prefers palm tree
habitats for the abundant food, especially the aguaje palm.
