9.2 Solving Quadratic Equations by
Finding Square Roots
GOAL
Solve a quadratic equation by finding square roots.
KEY WORDS
• Quadratic equation
• Leading coefficient
9.2 Solving Quadratic Equations by
Finding Square Roots
A QUADRATIC EQUATION is an equation that can be
written in the standard form:

ax + bx + c = 0
2
a is called the leading coefficient.

QUADRATIC EQUATION
When b = 0, this equation becomes ax2 + c = 0.

One way to solve a quadratic equation of the form

ax2 + c = 0 is to isolate the x2 on one side of the
equation. Then find the square root(s) of each side.

EXAMPLE 1 Solve Quadratic Equations.
Solve the equation. Write the solutions as integers if possible.
Otherwise, write them as radical expressions.
a) x2 = 4 b) x2 = 5
SOLUTION
a) x2 = 4 Write original equation.

x=± Find the square roots.

x=±2 2 = 4 and (-2) = 4

EXAMPLE 2 Solve Quadratic Equations.
Solve the equation.
a) x2 = 0 b) x2 = -1
SOLUTION
b) x2 = -1 Write original equation.

x2 = -1 has no real solution because the square of a

real number is never negative.
There is no real solution.

EXAMPLE 3 Solve Quadratic Equations.
Solve 3x2 – 48 = 0.
SOLUTION
3x2 – 48 = 0 Write original equation.

3x2 = 48 Add 48 to each side.

x2 = 16 Divide each side by 3.

x=± Find the square roots.

x = ±4 Write original equation.
