power.
◦Refers to the various branches of creative activity,
such as painting, music, literature, and dance.
What is Contemporary Art
◦Refers to the art of today produced by artists
who are living in the twenty-first century.
◦It provides an opportunity to reflect on
contemporary society and the issues relevant to
ourselves, and the world around us.
◦Art produced within “our lifetime”
What is Contemporary Art
◦The new style of art that emerged after World
War II is called contemporary art.
◦Contemporary artists did not feel obliged to
apply perspective, color combination,
naturalism and other guidelines that were
carefully observed in traditional art. They
deliberately broke the rules of traditional art.

Contemporary Philippine Art is art produced by
Filipino artists coming from the different regions in
the Philippines in the 21st century*.

The works reflect cultural diversity, technological
advancement, and make use of a wide range of
mediums.


Characteristics of Contemporary Art
1. Contemporary art is not confined to the museums.
2. Many contemporary artists are self-taught and did not
have formal education. Access to different kinds of
materials were originally used only for construction.
3. In architecture, different shapes and forms have emerged
as a result of the use of different materials.

4. Originality is not an issue in contemporary art.
5. Therefore, what is essential to contemporary artists is the
process of art-making.
With these characteristics, it can be said that
contemporary art is a statement that an artist makes about
life, thoughts, ideas, beliefs, and many other things that
define human life.

creatively and consider all mediums, including
performance, and interactive art.
The group should outline the concept, the intended
impact, and how they would execute the idea if they had
unlimited resources.

rest of the participants. Explain the
concept, the message behind it, and the
imagined execution.

Explore how these ideas challenge

Reflect on how the process of creating a
conceptual art piece differs from creating a

contemporary art often prioritizes the message
and concept over the medium.
