ni Rizal

- Nation, Heroes and Nationalism

- The 19th Century Philippines

- Family, Education and Martyrdom of Rizal

- Works and Writings of Rizal

*mid – term and final assessments

The Works
Of Jose Rizal
- His writings became more aggressive as he
returned abroad pertaining to the Spanish
government

- Product of his researches and readings from

different libraries in Europe

- Sobre La Indolencia de los Filipinos (The

Indolence of the Filipinos)
Sobre La Indolencia de los Filipinos
(The Indolence of the Filipinos)

- Counter the notion of the Spaniards about the

Filipinos (laziness)

- The work can be considered (arguably) as one

of his earliest critical anthropological analysis
dealing with the Filipino past prior to Spanish
colonization.
Sobre La Indolencia de los Filipinos
(The Indolence of the Filipinos)

FIRST PART
- Indolence of the Filipinos exist
- as “works and struggles of the Filipinos against
the climate, against nature and against men.”
- Due to climate differences and unequal workloads
Sobre La Indolencia de los Filipinos
(The Indolence of the Filipinos)
SECOND PART
- Indolence is a chronic illness
- Indolence if seen as a disease, must be and can
be treated
- Rizal used historical notes in order to justify
that indolence was not present among early
Filipinos and thus, they are not inherent. But
due to Spanish colonization, indolence has
become “prevalent” in many Filipinos given
their working conditions.
Sobre La Indolencia de los Filipinos
(The Indolence of the Filipinos)
THIRD PART
- Indolence was caused by consistent instability
“Man works for an object. Remove the object and
you reduce him to inaction.”
- Demoralization of the Filipinos was caused by
the harsh actions of the Spaniards even during
its early decades in the country
- as the unstable conditions that made the
Filipinos “give up.”
Sobre La Indolencia de los Filipinos
(The Indolence of the Filipinos)
FOURTH PART
- Death of Trade and commerce
- Failure of the galleon trade, too much working
hours, gambling, bad treatment of farmers,
abuses of the encomenderos, mishandling of
agriculture (haciendas)

- **poor education system

Sobre La Indolencia de los Filipinos
(The Indolence of the Filipinos)
FIFTH PART
- Lack of training, education and motivation

- Rizal pointed out that the best solution for the

malady that is indolence is an effective
education that Spain (hopefully) might give
without any conditions as learning and
enlightenment must be considered altogether a
gift.
Philippines a Century Hence

- Rizal’s prediction (an essay)

“In the long run, the Spanish system cannot

prevail over the American. While the former
exhausts colonies… America draws to itself the
most energetic element from all the lands; and
these on her soil, free from trammels, and
restlessly pushing forward…” This is cognitive
background, with Rizal’s prophecy, not to be
assumed as an endorsement for federalism.
-Feodor Jagor
Philippines a Century Hence
Rizal believed that the islands and its people
were in good condition prior to the arrival of the
Spaniards who have ravaged and stripped the
Filipinos their glory and identity

The Spaniards brainwashed the Filipinos

The Filipinos will not have the desire to become

free if the colonization remains, and will be
bound to follow orders as long as they could
Philippines a Century Hence
- Will the Philippines remain to be a colony of
Spain after a century?

- PREDICTIONS:
(1) The Filipinos will become independent as it
cannot stay in an abusive relationship with
Spain
(2) the Filipinos will be still under Spain but with
conditions far better than what they had in the
past

IT WIL NOT HAPPEN IF…opportunities will be

given, representatives in Spanish cortes and there will
be fair treatment
Philippines a Century Hence
- the reforms done by the upper class is
peaceful and fruitful and in contrast, reforms
led by the masses would probably be violent
and fatal

- Lack of press freedom and lack of

representation in the Spanish government

- The last part will be seen on the module,

pages 8 to 10.
Liham sa mga Kababihan
ng Malolos
- Ang papel ng mga kababaihan sa lipunang
kolonyal ay nabago bunga ng
diskriminasyon hindi lamang sa lahi kundi
maging sa kasarian

- Ang katapangan ng mga dalagang taga

Malolos ay naging kalakasan ng mga babae
bilang mga katuwang sa pagbuo ng isang
malaya at magaling na bayan
Liham sa mga Kababihan
ng Malolos
- Sa pamamagitan ng kanilang petisyon na
makapag-aral ay, si Rizal mismo ay kanilang
napahanga

Egaligad

Pag-iingat at pagmamahal sa puri
