ELECTROMAGNETISM

Electromagnetism refers to a process where a magnetic field

is produced when the current in the conductor is
introduced.
Electromagnets are made of coils of wire with electricity
passing through them. Moving charges create magnetic
fields, so when the coils of wire in an electromagnet have
an electric current passing through them, the coils behave
like a magnet.
Application of electromagnetism
1.Electric bell:The switch is pressed and current flows
through the circuit. The electromagnet is powered
and generates a magnetic field that attracts the iron
strip towards it. The striker strikes the gong (bell).
When the striking arm strikes the gong, the contact
is broken and the current stops flowing through the
circuit.
Coils and Solenoids
A coil is a series of looped copper wire up to a required
length.
Solenoid: A solenoid on the other hand, is a coil of insulated
wire of many turns. It can also be used for making
temporary magnet.

APPLICATION /USES OF ELECTROMAGNET

1. Electromagnets are used in electric bell and ear phones.
2. Magnetic field produced are used in electric motor and
generators.
3. they are used in lifting heavy materials instead of cranes
4.They are used in separating magnetic materials from
non-magnetic materials.
5.They are used in the hospitals for removing splinter
of iron or steel from the eye.
