Introduction
 Shear Walls
o critical structural elements designed to
resist lateral forces, such as those from
wind and seismic activity.
o carry and transfer the lateral forces down
Conventional shear wall
to the foundation,
o prevent excessive sway or displacement,
o maintain the structural integrity of the
building
o minimize the risk of damage during
extreme events.

Introduction

Problem of Conventional Shear wall:

•Lateral Load Resistance: Structures in seismic zones require improved resistance to lateral forces.

•Early Buckling: Traditional shear walls are prone to early buckling under high lateral loads, compromising stability.

•Design Optimization: There is a need to better understand failure mechanisms and optimize design for enhanced
resilience under cyclic and seismic loads.

Introduction

Solution as Corrugated Steel Plate Shear Wall

(CSPSW):

•High Strength and Stiffness: CSPSWs provide superior strength and

stiffness for lateral support.

•Enhanced Stability: Corrugation patterns prevent early buckling, improving

out-of-plane stiffness.

•Performance Optimization: Studies on corrugation angle, direction, and

stiffening elements enhance shear resistance and stability in extreme
conditions.

Literature Review
 Cao et al. (2022)
• Investigated inelastic buckling behavior in CSPSWs with steel frames
under lateral loads.
• Found that corrugation resists in-plane deformation and delays failure,
enhancing wall resilience.

Literature Review
 Fadhil et al. (2018)
• Examined corrugation angle and direction impact on CSPSWs.
• Vertical corrugation is superior to horizontal in stiffness, ductility, and
strength.

For CSPSW with

horizontal or vertical
corrugation, the maximum
strength could be obtained
with the use of 10º
corrugation angle

Literature Review
 Wen et al. (2024)
• Stiffeners enhance shear resistance and energy dissipation.
• Out-of-plane deformation is reduced, improving wall stability.

Literature Review
 Tong et al. (2019)
• Investigated elastic buckling in trapezoidal walls with vertical stiffeners.
• Vertical stiffeners help prevent premature failure, supporting stability
under high loads.

9
Literature Review
 Tong et al. (2020)
• Studied double-corrugated shear walls for improved shear resistance.
• Lateral stresses are better distributed, reducing risk of failure.
• Increased aspect ratio, bolt column number, and amplitude enhance
resistance.

Literature Review
 Wang et al. (2019)
• Analyzed CSPSWs’ hysteretic behavior under cyclic loading.
• Corrugation improves energy dissipation, vital for earthquake-resistant
design.

Research Gap

 Focus on Steel Boundary Frames:

• Majority of studies use steel frames with corrugated steel infill.
• Limited research on RC (Reinforced Concrete) frames with corrugated steel infill.
• Further investigation needed for RC frames to assess compatibility and performance.

 Steel Plate-to-Frame Connections:

• Few studies have examined connection methods between steel plates and frames.
• Diverse connection techniques are needed to improve structural efficiency and resilience.

Slide 12 of 11
Objective

a) Investigate the impact of varying corrugation angles and layouts (horizontal and vertical) on the
strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation of CSPSWs.

b) Analyse the effect of alternative steel plate-to-frame connection types on CSPSW performance, aiming
to optimize connection methods for enhanced structural efficiency and resilience.

Design of the specimen (in progress…)

 Designing of the specimens like frame is in process and corrugated sheet is ordered to
design as per our necessary requirement and the other important designs for our frame
like no. of struts and the connection between the corrugated sheet and R.C. Frame will be
by using the fishplate.
