Graph
Vertical Line Test – a
graph represents a
function if and only if each
vertical line intersects the
graph at most once.
Equation
To determine if an equation is a function,
you need to solve for y in terms of x. It is
a function if it has only one root. On the
other hand, it is not a function when it
has two or more roots.
1. 2x + y = 3. y = - 2x +
1 2
2. 4y – 7x – 8 4. +

Find the DOMAIN and RANGE of the following relations: :

1. f = {(1,2), (2,2), (3,5), (4,5)}

2. g = {(-3,5), (6,0), (-3,2), (-1,5), (0,-6)}

3. h = {(-2,5), (-1,2), (-5,2), (-1,3), (2,-5)}
Which of the following equations describe a function: :

DOMAIN
AND RANGE
OF THE
FUNCTION
Restrictions to consider when
finding the domain and range of
some functions:
1. Radicals with even indices must
be nonnegative (radicand is ≥ zero).

2. Denominators must not be equal

to zero.
NOTE: To find DOMAIN, solve for y in terms of
x. To find RANGE, solve for x in terms of y.

EXAMPLE:
Find the DOMAIN and RANGE of the following
equations:
