Introduction to Mughal
architecture
The Mughals built magnificent forts, palaces, gates, public buildings,
mosques, water tanks or wells, etc. They also laid out many gardens. These
gardens were heavily influenced by Persian style. Some of the typical
features include pools, fountains canals inside the gardens.
The real phase of Mughal architecture began during the reign of Akbar. He
brought together the fine architectural tradition also influenced with the
consolidation of the empire, the Mughal architecture reached its end.
Towards the end of Jahangir’s reign, buildings came to be made entirely of
marble and the walls were decorated with floral designs with semi-precious
stones. All these features are evident in the tomb of Itmad-ud-Daula.

Architecture
The Mughal Architecture reflects a blend of Indian, Persian
and Islamic techniques. It also reflects technological
advancement, extensive use of resources, but more
significantly it show the aesthetic taste of the Mughal rulers
and their love for poetry and admiration of nature.
Features of Mughal Architecture
• Perfect radial or bilateral symmetry in the buildings and extensive use of red
sandstone with white marble inlay work. Later, pure marble became a very popular
material for buildings.
• The use of arches, minarets and domes continued. However the dome becomes
slightly pointed.
• The laying of gardens is one of the most important aspects of the Mughal
architecture.
• Decoration of buildings was an important aspect which reflects extensive use of
resources. They used the art of pietra dura on ceramic tiles, inlaid with coloured and
semi-precious stones. Carved and inlaid stone work is another important feature
which is reflected in the making of jalis or pierced marble screens with intricate
designs.

• Other elements included constructing of chattris, domed
kiosks resting on pillars, chajjas and jarokas, projecting
balconies supported on corbels and with hood, resting on
the columns became important features of the period.
