What is an Integer?
An integer is a number that is either a positive
whole number, negative whole number, or 0.

Positive Integers Negative Integers

Plot 5 on the number line.

the point.
Each mark is 2 units apart, so 5
should be in the middle of 4 and 6.
What is a Rational Number?
A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a ratio of two
integers. An integer is a rational number, too!

'irrational numbers,' have an
infinite number of non-
repeating decimal places and
cannot be expressed as a
ratio of two integers.

the given number falls -2 -1 0 1 2
between.

Plotting a Rational Number How would you plot -1.25 in the number line?

For fractions, divide each unit

into parts equal to the -2 -1 0 1 2
fraction's denominator, then
plot the point.
-1.25 is between -1 and -2.
For decimals, divide each unit The fraction equivalent of 0.25 is

into parts equal to its fraction So, divide the unit between -1 and -2 into four
equivalent, then plot the point. parts, then plot the point on the 1st mark.

Can we order rational
numbers similar to how
we order integers?

Try this:
2.25, 2.75, 1.5, −2.5,
−2.75.

Let's discuss this in the

next session.
