Effective

Paraphrasing
What is Paraphrasing?
1. Paraphrasing is the act of
putting the ideas of an
author into your own
words caring not to
misinterpret or distort
the former’s original
message.
2. It involves truly
understanding the
author’s message and
then synthesizing them
into words that reflect
the message of the
original author
3. Even if you effectively Photo taken from http://www.virtuallibrary.info/paraphrasing.html

paraphrase a literary
work you must still cite
because the idea is still

When Paraphrasing
1. Make sure to truly understand the texts you are
reading.
2. Use a dictionary or thesaurus to help you
understand terms or words or even phrases that
are unfamiliar to you.
3. Imagine resending a message to someone who is
unfamiliar with the terms used by the original
author and you need to use your own words to
make him/ her understand.
4. If you choose to use one or two sentences of the
author, make sure to enclose them in “quotation
marks” and cite them in your Footnote and
Bibliography. Failure to do so will make you guilty
of plagiarism
5. Finally, carefully choose only the important parts
of the texts that summarize the whole idea of the
original work.
When Paraphrasing
 When you use an exact phrase from the original passage, but
paraphrase the rest, the original phrase needs to be in quotation
marks. For example, the passage below is from the following
book (cited in MLA format):
 Wells, Paul. The Horror Genre: From Beelzebub to Blair
Witch. London: Wallflower, 2000. Print.

 Original Passage:
 "The horror genre has become increasingly concerned with the
relative and fragile nature of existence.“

 Acceptable Paraphrase
(with in-text citation to the exact page of the book):
 Horror films often examine the "relative and fragile nature" of
humanity and what it means to exist (Wells 9).

Example of a poor paraphrase

1. The paraphrase has a very similar sentence structure to the original

quote; it essentially has a few different words from the original quote
and does not flow well.
2. The term “civic hub” is not in quotes (it should be, as it is a unique
phrase used in the original quote).
3. There is no citation crediting the source of the idea

Example of an effective paraphrase

1. The paraphrase reflects the same ideas as the original quote, but
is in its own words and writing style.
2. The term “underground purgatory” is placed in quotes, as it is a unique
phrase used in the original quote.
3. There is a parenthetical citation, citing the source of the idea.

Ebersole, S. (2005). On their own: Students' academic use of
the commercialized web. Library Trends, 53, 530-538.v

Original Passage:

"Despite its origin in scientific research and educational pursuits, it did not take long for marketers, advertisers,
and public relations practitioners to find the Internet. What they found was an uncharted land that rivaled their
wildest dreams. More than a decade later the Web remains the least regulated of all mass media. Although the
dot com bust of the early 2000s slowed the commercial expansion of the Web, we are beginning to witness a
strong rebound in every area, including online advertising. Today, the one feature that best defines the Web is its
unrelenting commercialism."

Paraphrase:

Although it was originally used in scientific research and education, marketers, advertisers and PR people quickly
found the Internet. They were happy to discover a medium that was mostly unregulated and still is more than ten
years later. Although there was a slowdown a few years ago due to the dot-com bust, commercial use of the Web
is increasing again; one of the most obvious aspects of today's Web is commercialism.

Is this plagiarism?

This is plagiarism. The writer of this paraphrase changed a few words and phrases, but did not synthesize the
original paragraph and change it into his own words. The writer used ideas in the original paragraph with minor
changes in the wording, and failed to give credit to the original source.

In the life of Muslims living in Mindanao, there exist laws
governing their judicial systems in terms of crimes, punishments,
and settlements. This has been their means of maintaining and
restoring social order through time. However, when certain groups
of Muslims migrate to different regions wherein Islam is not the
mainstream, they have had to assimilate to the new environment,
particularly in terms of the applicability of their justice system and
notion of justice with respect to cases of dispute.

The Need for the Development of Antong Falls as Nature Park and
Resort Complex

One of the areas that hold potentials to become a premiere tourism destination
in Pangasinan is Antong Falls. Antong Falls is a natural formation of rocks and
cold springs located within the Caraballo Mountain Range in Sison, Pangasinan.
The area is a popular getaway destination for local residents and visitors, but it is
virtually unknown to most tourists and travelers. However, the development of
Antong Falls as a world class ecotourism destination is expected to boost the
tourism value of the area and bring in much needed socioeconomic progress in
the communities and nearby areas in the form of infrastructure boom, opening of
businesses and enterprises, employment and other tourism related activities.
