 BASIC ALLIANCE – The alliance of the working class and

peasantry serving as the foundation of the Communist

Insurgent or that of the National United Front
 BASIC FORCES OF THE REVOLUTION – The working
class, the Peasantry and the urban petty bourgeoisie.
 BUREAUCRAT CAPITALISM – The use of public office to
accumulate private assets in capital and land.
 BOLSHEVIK – The term originally used during the
Menshevik (minority) and Bolshevik (majority) split in the
Russian Socialist Labor Party before the Russian
Revolution. The meaning of the word had changed after the
Russian Revolution: it refers to the high praise and
distinction for communists, signifying superiority and
mastery of the qualities of revolutionary leadership,
efficiency, and courage..
 BOURGEOISE – The term applied to the capitalist class,
which include not only the wealthy but also middle – class
people or sometimes petty bourgeoisie is used to distinguish
small businessmen.
 CADRE – The trusted inner circle of trained members and
leaders on whom the party can depend to carry out its
policies and programs without any questions or objections.
The Party cadres constitute the commanding staff of the
party.
 CAPITALISM – An economic system based on the private
ownership of the means of production and the private
accumulation and use of profits.
 CLASS STRUGGLE – Two different class in the society
which is in constant and inevitable economic conflict;
example the workers and the capitalist. To the communists it
is the key to overthrow the ruling class.
 COMMUNISM – A system of thought and action
originated by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels,
developed by VI Lenin and his successors. This system
advocates, among other things: Materialist explanation
of origin of man and the universe (2) a comprehensive
economic interpretation of history centering about the
class struggle; (3) abolition of the noncommunist state,
which conceived as an instrument of exploitation (4)
revolutionary theory (5) moral code based on utility: on
nonsupernatural concepts; (6) abolition of religions; (7)
a world – wide communist revolution; and (8) a world
– wide communist society.

 COMMUNISM (premitive) – A type of communal living

reported to have existed in early stages of man’s
history.
 COMPRADOR BIG BOURGEOISIE – The highest stratum
of the Phil Bourgeoisie, which is mercantile rather than
industrial in character.
 DEMOCRATIC CENTRALISM – The principal organizational
principle of the CPP, means democracy under centralized
leadership on the basis of democracy; superior authority of
higher organs over lower organs and that of the majority
over the minority.
 DEMOCRACY – system of governance that favors rule of
majority, govt for the people and by the people. To the
Communists; bourgeoisie democracy is limited, repressive,
favors the minority. After seizure of power they will
inaugurate, the proletarian democracy will be in essence the
dictatorship of the proletarian that will continue the
revolution until it reach communism or the stateless society.
 FEUDALISM – Wealth and power based on the private
ownership of landed estates, the exaction of rent or tribute,
and the practice of usury.
 HORIZONTAL MULTIPLICATION OF NPA UNITS – The
formation of small NPA military units on a wide scale rather
than their concentration into large units at a few points in the
Phil.
 IMPERIALISM – The highest, the most developed, and last
stage of a moribound and decaying capitalism. As worked
out by Lenin, imperialism develops when capital and
production (in a capitalist society) become concentrated in
the hands of a relatively few individuals on high economic
levels.
 LEAPFROG EXPANSION METHOD – The deployment of
party and NPA cadres to noncontiguous but strategic points
in the archipelago without waiting for the wave – upon –
wave advance of the revolutionary forces .
 LEFT OPPORTUNISM – Any erroneous policy of attempting
to seize political power in a short period of time purely
through military means notwithstanding the inadequacy of
the mil force itself and of its political support.
 MASSES – The ordinary people of a society who are not
“educated” in the science of Marxism – Leninism and hence
must be led by the proletariat and its vanguard, the
communist party, toward the goal of a communist society.
“Radicalizing the masses” signifies efforts by the Party,
through agitation, to make more sympathetic to communist
aims.
 NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC REVOLUTION OR NEW
DEMOCRATIC REVOLUTION – The first stage of the CPP
revolution; Bourgeois – democratic in character but led by
the working class through the CPP, with the perspective of
proceeding to socialist revolution.
 PARTY - Organizational concept evolved by Lenin of those
trained in Marxism – Leninism who, regarding themselves
as a “Vanguard,” are to lead the proletariat toward
communist world society.
 PARTY LINE – The sum total of the Party’s decisions, aim,
programs, and demands at any given time.
 PROLETARIAT – A key word in all communist literature,
meaning the Industrial workers or working class.
 PROLETARIAN INTERNATIONALISM – The principle led
by the working class party and involving the overthrow of the
bourgeoisie by the working class throughout the world.
 PURGES - A characteristic inherent in communism whereby
undesirable members are expelled from the Party (or, when
communism is in state power, exiled or executed).
 PROLETARIAN REVOLUTION – The seizure of the government, if
necessary by force and violence, by the proletariat led by the
Communist Party, leading to the establishment of a Marxist state;
called proletarian revolution.
 PROLETARIAN INTERNATIONALISM – The principle led by the
working class party and involving th% overthrow of the bourgeoisie
by the working class throughout the world.
 SELF – CRITICISM – A communist technique ostensibly to detect
and correct weaknesses in Party life; actually to enforce communist
discipline..
 SEMICOLONIALISM – Indirect colonial rule by a foreign power
through unequal treaties, agreements, and arrangements, although
the subordinate state enjoys formal independence.
 SEMIFEUDALISM – An agrarian and pre – industrial economy

of the peasants because I frequently listened to tenants
presenting their problems to my parents…

Even the populist speeches of politicians I heard during

election time and the romantic short stories I read playing on the
divide between rich and poor had some influenced me to be on
the side of the poor.” (Source: The Phil Revolution: The leaders
View by Rainer Werning)
• INFLUENCED FROM READING BOOKS ON
MARXISM DURING HIS UNIVERSITY DAYS IN UP
DILIMAN:

According to JMS; “… In late 1958 that I discovered a

few Marxist works in the UP main Library and in private
collections of friends. This included the Communist manifesto of
Marx and Engels, Anti-Duhring of Engels, Materialism and
Empirio-Criticism of Lenin and Analysis of Classes in Chinese
Society by Mao Tse Tung.

He was responsible for forming the study which

consolidated into the Student Cultural Association of the
University of the Phil (SCAUP)” (Source: The Phil Revolution:
The leaders View by Rainer Werning)
The role of the members of Indonesian
Communist Party:

From Jan 1962, JMS, Travels abroad for the first

time to Indonesia to study Indonesian Language and
Literature. In Indonesia he met with members of the
Indonesian Communist Party.

He return to the Phil on June same year and in Dec

Revelation of Ka Joey (a victim of the CPP’s anti-DPA
campaign):
• The Youth Factor:

“At 17 or 18, my experience was very middle class, very

male, very city. Many adolescent problems were yet unresolved.
Then the movement entered the picture, with its promise of
providing proper direction and full excitement….The movement
comprised the formative period of my life, including my
intellectual formation…

The party took advantage of my weaknesses: my

impetuosity, MY YOUTH…How did I imagine being relevant? An
agent of change when I never really understood what it was I
wanted to change…(Source: To Suffer thy Comrades)

ORGANIZATION OF THE
NDFP
CONCEPT OF SOCIAL CLASS

Theory of society and its

stratification as defined by
their relationship to the
mode of production during a
particular period.
CONCEPT OF CONTRADICTION

•Unity of the opposites which states

the existence of the universal mutual
opposition of parts.
•Social classes represent different
class interests which are potentially
hostile.
•A non-communist might understand
this as a conflict of interest; to the
communist, contradiction is inherent
CONCEPT OF STRUGGLE

•Derived from the mutual opposition

contained in a thing.
•All things are viewed in two (2) states of
motion.
–Relative Rest
–Conspicuous Change
•During relative rest, there is quantitative
change. When it dissolves, a qualitative
change occurs.
CONCEPT OF FORCE

•Not exclusively a military concept with its

tactical significance but is a social
concept.
•Not only a particular group attitude
towards the status quo but also the
concrete action of a group of persons to
determine the actions of others.
•Military force is just one type of force
which employs a particular means and is
significant at a certain period.

CONCEPT BUT A SOCIAL
CONCEPT
CONCEPT OF FORCE

MEANS TO DETERMINE ACTION

OF OTHERS
•THREAT (Compulsion)
•PERSONAL LOYALTY (Leadership)
•INSTITUTIONAL LOYALTY
(Legitimacy)
•POSITIVE INCENTIVES (Interest)
CONCEPT OF FORCE

•Inherent in this concept is

that force can not be created
by coercion; it arises from
motivation.
•Motivation is derived from
social contradiction.
•Political activity is the
manipulation of contradictions
to maximize one's own forces
and minimize that of the
CONCEPT OF BALANCE OF FORCE

•The distribution of contending

forces in society.
•For and against the status quo.
•A compound of two distinct
concepts (Force Ratio and Power
Ratio).
CONCEPT OF BALANCE OF FORCE

TWO DISTINCT CONCEPTS

•FORCE RATIO - the number of

people in each side.
•POWER RATIO - the ratio of
effectiveness of each side's
operatives after taking into account
power multipliers.
CONCEPT OF SECURITY

•A favorable environment.
•The population is composed of
sympathetic and neutral
elements.
•Hostile elements have been
eliminated.
CONCEPT OF VICTORY

•Attainment of decisive
superiority in the balance of
forces.
•Unchallengeable ability to
dictate the action of all within a
specific area.
