In the very heart of London,
above the River Thames, there is
one of the main sights of
England and the business card of
the city - Tower Bridge. Designed
in the Victorian Gothic style, the
bridge seems to be the same age
as Westminster Abbey, although
it was built only at the end of the
19th century. Despite its
relatively young age, it attracts
millions of tourists from all over
the world every year. And a few
blocks from Tower Bridge is Big
Ben, the London Eye and other
recognizable sights of London.
The clock tower was built in 1288 in
Westminster, but originally had a
different appearance. It was completely
rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style after a
huge fire in 1834 in the Palace of
Westminster. The reconstruction of the
building was undertaken by architects
Charles Berry and Augustus Welby
Pugin. In 1859, a clock was launched
that still keeps accurate time.
There are two versions of the origin of
the name of the tower. The first version
claims that the tower was named after
Benjamin Hall, who oversaw the
construction of Big Ben. Because of its
size and weight, it was often called "Big
Ben". The second version says that the
tower was named after the popular
heavyweight boxer Benjamin Count.

Parliament are held. It is connected to
Trafalgar Square by Whitehall Street. The
architectural style is Neo-Gothic. At first, until
1529, it served as the capital residence of the
English kings. After the fire on October 16,
1834, the palace was rebuilt according to the
neo-Gothic design of Charles Berry and
Augustes Pugin. What remains of the medieval
palace are the Westminster Reception Hall
(1097), where the Westminster courts sat, and
the Jewel Tower (built to store the treasury of
Edward III). The palace has 1100 rooms, 100
stairs and 5 kilometers of corridors. The clock
