SOCIAL CONVENTION 1. Behaviour & attitudes that most people in a society consider to be normal & right. (Longman Dictionary) 2. A set of agreed, stipulated or generally standards, norms,social norms or criteria, often taking the form of customs. (Wikipedia) 3. Social conventions are basically things that are part of a society's expected behaviors and beliefs.

4. Modes of behaviour that are deemed to be acceptable in society. Examples : - strangers being introduced shake hands, as in most societies, - but bow toward each other, in Korea, Japan and China - in the US, eye contact, a nod of the head toward each other, and a smile, with no bowing; the palm of the hand faces sideways, neither upward nor downward, - in a business handshake - present business cards to each other, in business meetings

GREETING
- Hello, how are you? - Fine thanks / Very well, thanks In more formal situations they say Good Morning, Good Afternoon or Good Evening. These are commonly used more when speaking on the telephone as well.

KISS, HUG AND SHAKE HANDS?

 On meeting someone for the first time, they would normally shake hands if its a formal situation (at work for example), or even just smile at each other. If its a friend or casual acquaintance, they would hug or (between two women or a man and woman) make one kiss on the cheek.

ARGENTINA

GREETING
- Hola! Como estas? - Que hacs? - Todo bien? - Bien y vos? (Hi, how are you?) (more informal, the equivalent to Whats up?) (You all right?) (Im fine and you?)

  In Argentina, people are fairly tactile. They hug and give one peck on the check when they greet friends and family and even acquaintances (both male and female). In a more formal situation, they shake hands (at least the first time they meet.)

THAILAND

KISS, HUG AND SHAKE HANDS?  we dont touch, hug, kiss each other  greet friends and colleagues and pay respect to seniors,  put your palms together in a lotus bud at your chest and bow your head so that the tip of your thumb fingers touch your chin (friend), nose (senior), and in-between eye brows (monk, royal family)

Greetings are indicators of the relative position of individuals in the social hierarchy.

KISS, HUG AND SHAKE HANDS?

 Close friends hug. Man hugs man, woman hugs woman. Older uncles and aunties hug younger children. Grandparents are not to be hugged, you are supposed to touch their feet and receive blessings for a long life, a speedy marriage, numerous children, etc. Kiss is not part of Indian Culture. Only infants are to be publicly kissed.

KISS, HUG AND SHAKE HANDS?  They will greet people through handshake but the women does not shake hands with a man unless hes from her family or their mahram.  They just simply saying Assalamualaikum ( Peace be upon you )

types of communication
INFORMAL
Usually used in people we are close Contain shortened version of words Contain slang words Eg: - My sister s boyfriend is a real airhead. - After working all day I am really beat. Eg: personal conversation with friends and family - Hey yo mate! Hows it hanging?

FORMAL
Used in professional setting-workplace Pronounce words correctly No slang Eg: speech, talk Good evening, sir/madam, how are you this fine evening?

PURPOSE OF COMMUNICATION
To achieve common understanding. To create new or better awareness. To send the message effectively to the receiver/ audience. Also the transduction of emotions and thought from one to another. To intentionally create harmony or dissonance with the sender and receiver. Also links people who believe in a common cause, together with a view to strengthen relationships.

AUDIENCE
 The group of spectators at a public events ; as in attendance at a theater or concert.  The person reached by a book, radio or television broadcast.  A regular public that manifest interest support, enthusiasm, or the like.  Opportunity to be heard; chance to speak to or before a person or group; a hearing.  A formal interview with a sovereign, high officer of government or other high-ranking person.
