DART MANIPULATION

The flat pattern technique is an efficient method for creating garment patterns that ensure consistent size and fit, relying on previously developed working patterns. It includes methods like slash and spread and pivotal techniques for dart manipulation, allowing for easy alterations and design adaptations. This technique is particularly beneficial for mass production and enables designers to creatively restyle patterns while maintaining original measurements.

FLAT PATTERN TECHNIQUE

DART MANIPULATION
FLAT PATTERN TECHNIQUE
 The flat pattern making method is the fastest
and most efficient method ever devised for
developing patterns that control the
consistency of size and fit of mass produced
garments.
 The system depends upon patterns have
been previously developed and
perfected.
 The patterns, called working patterns are
used as base from which variety of other
pattern shapes are Generated.
 The original working pattern is never
altered but must remain in its original form to
WORKING PATTERNS
 It consist mainly of basic
back and front bodice, skirt,
and sleeve and other
foundation pattern derived
from them.
 These working pattern
should remain seamless
unless the patternmaker is
well experienced, as
seamless patterns are
easier to manipulate and
develop.
TYPES
 Slash and spread method
 Pivotal method

 Slash and spread method –it is easy to understand

as it clearly illustrates the changes taking place

 Pivotal method –it is equally reliable and less time

consuming, but it is more advanced.

 All pattern manipulation is done while the pattern

lies flat on the table, hence the name “ FLAT
PATTERN TECHNIQUE”
APPLICATION AND USES OF FLAT
PATTERN TECHNIQUE
 Flat pattern methods provide the versatility to create
designs according to fashion change.
 Basic slopers are basic blocks which can be adapted for a
particular design.
 Pattern alteration is very easy. Patterns can be altered by
creating and shifting darts to new places, by adding or
deleting darts, by adding pleats, gathers, yokes etc.
 The main and one important advantage of this technique is
that the newly developed designer pattern retains the size
of original basic pattern.
 It is very useful for mass production of garments as it based
on standard measurements.
 One basic pattern or sloper can be used again and again to
develop several designs,
 A creative person whose interests and talents lie
in the costume arts can design her own wardrobe
by creative use of flat pattern design. One can
restyle old and out of date pattern.
 Provide better understanding and use of
commercial patterns.
DART MANIPULATION
 Changing the
location of darts
within the pattern
frame.
 Darts are
responsible for fit
and it will always be
a part of design in
one or other form.
