Over the course of last year I saw several mentions on social media and other online posts about Obsidian, the personal knowledge management application, not being able to lock posts. I had an idea about this at the time and finally got around to picking it off my to do list. In this post I’m going to outline something that I believe is at least a workable partial solution for this.

Last year we finished the conversion of our garage into a small office, and I guess it must be the time of year, but recently there were a number of occasions I was being washed out in video calls. I looked more like the mask from the Scream movies than a human being. Closing the blinds helped, but then unless I put the full room lights on, it just wasn’t light enough. While I do have a (cheap) ring light encircling my web cam, I do find that a little harsh at the best of times, even on its lowest setting. I decided therefore it was time to invest in a new light for my desk to help with this.
After a bit of research on lighting options and pricing things up, I settled on the Logitech Litra Glow light. It was great except that the button for it on the back and I kept nudging it around and it was a bit weird and obvious when I was doing it live on a call (after forgetting to turn it on before joining). That and the Logitech software to control it was not something I really wanted to install on my Mac and was never going to be permitted on my work PC.
Fortunately, I was able to piece together a solution that got around all of this and works really well for my setup. In this post, I’m going to walk through the setup.

In my previous role I used to deliver a fair number of workshops, extended planning sessions, etc. These would often run for a day or more, and so having regular breaks was a key consideration in keeping everyone fresh, alert, and engaged. However, I did find that many customers treated the breaks as more of a rough guide than a set period. Even when stating we would start on time, inevitably key people would be missing from the room and we would be forced to wait otherwise we would waste time repeating things to get them up to speed when they did resurface. Eventually, I began using a set of slides that conveyed a sense of urgency for me, and seemed to have a better psychological effect. They were in effect a countdown timer, but something that involved a few additional visuals.
