Overview

The rapidly advancing field of battery technology is pivotal for the decarbonisation of the transport sector and the broader transition to renewable energy sources. However, ensuring the safety, efficiency and longevity of batteries hinges on accurate thermal management, which in turn relies on precise thermal measurements and advanced modelling techniques. This presentation delves into the critical aspects of thermal measurement and modelling of batteries, spotlighting the challenges and innovations that are shaping the future of battery design and application.

In the domain of thermal measurement, we confront the limitations of traditional methods used in the battery industry, which suffer from errors up to 50%. We introduce measurement techniques designed for lithium-ion batteries, which promise to enhance accuracy by maintaining symmetrical thermal boundary conditions around the cell casing. This innovation significantly mitigates thermal pathway issues and represents a leap forward in the thermal characterization of battery technologies. On the modelling front, the presentation explores the comprehensive capabilities of the Battery Design Module, an extension of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software, which facilitates detailed simulation across various scales—from the microstructures within the battery's porous electrode to the macroscopic level of the battery pack, including its thermal management systems.
