This speech focuses on the image of Mary’s pregnancy with the body of Christ visible in the womb ... more This speech focuses on the image of Mary’s pregnancy with the body of Christ visible in the womb (Platytera). Through iconographic analysis and comparison with written sources, we will try to demonstrate that this type of image was used to defend the virginal nature of the conception of Christ miraculously happened without sexual act. From the early Christian centuries and throughout the Middle Ages, in fact, the Virgin was the subject of intricate theological debates and intellectual controversies that often led to heretical and misleading solutions. Among these questions, one of the most hot topic concerned the role of Mary in the Incarnation of Christ, the modalities of her conception and the definition of the dogma of her perpetual virginity. About these debares the sense of sight plays a fundamental role since Christian art has helped mariology by producing images that reveal in a simple and clear way the teachings of ‘vera doctrina’ and by converting into a images the reflections of the learned theologians of the Middle Ages. In agreement with the specialist studies of Aireen Grace Andal, Elizabeth L'Estrange, Caroline Walker Bynum and drawing on the research carried out during my PhD, two types of images are considered in which the body of Christ appears emblematically. These are 'paradoxical' images, since Christ appears or enclosed within a clipeus that represents the inside of the mother’s womb or in narrative scenes in which his presence should not be admitted: 1. Theotokos Platytera 2. Scenes of the Annunciation with the visible foetus Of these images I will try to propose a common origin from the same Byzantine imperial context.
