One commonly used coding language for their configuration is the VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL). Whilst VHDL is used for hardware description, it is developed in a similar way to traditional software, and many safety critical software certification standards require the use of coding subsets and style guidance in order to ensure known language vulnerabilities are avoided.

New techniques and approaches are emerging for systems development, such as the OMG's “model driven architectures”(MDA). These approaches represent a very distinct shift from traditional approaches,(such as the ubiquitous “V” model). They offer ways of reducing uncertainty by breaking down the process into different areas of concern or “domains”, each domain representing a different perspective of the system.

This paper presents a Model Driven Architecture approach to development of Integrated Modular Avionics Systems. Required system behaviour has been captured in a Platform Independent Model using UML annotated with the Object Constraint Language. The model and its constraints have then been transformed to form a Platform Specific Model. The paper describes the benefits this approach could have to the development, certification and incremental change of IMA systems.

They offer many benefits over traditional micro-processors such as the ability to efficiently run tasks in parallel and also highly predictable timing performance. They are becoming increasingly popular for use in the safety critical domain where predictability is essential.
