In 2011, I graduated from the Manchester Metropolitan University's Institute of Social and Spatial Transformation with a PhD which examined the discursive construction of community and creativity during Liverpool's Capital of Culture year in 2008 and its five year preparation period.
Between 2011 and 2014 I taught in the Human Geography and Sociology department of Strathclyde University. Designing and delivering modules on Rural Geography, People Place and Policy, Globalisation and Anti-Globalisation, Modernism and Planning, and Research Methods.
I contributed to the work of Glasgow Games Monitor research group (gamesmonitor2014.org). Our work sought to contextualise Glasgow's Commonwealth games in a wider critical context of the urban renewal currently on-going in the east of Glasgow. Our work focused on debates on housing, welfare cuts, gentrification and privatisation of land and key services.
I am currently writing a paper which brings aspects of the post-political debate to bear on Glasgow's Commonwealth Games 2014.
I will be taking up a position as lecturer in Human Geography at York St John University in September 2015.

Ways of Knowing the Landscape of the New Towns: A Lefebvrian Analysis

This chapter explores how knowledge of landscape has been produced by different groups of interes... more This chapter explores how knowledge of landscape has been produced by different groups of interests in the Mark 3 partnership New Town of Warrington, UK, referring specifically to a neighbourhood called Birchwood. I introduce my on-going research project Days of the New Town and present findings as a point of encounter between knowledge of landscape as professional expertise and as socially lived experience. I place this encounter within the theoretical context of Lefebvre’s writings on social space. Specifically, I use his spatial triad, three overlapping concepts on how space is produced as lived, conceived and perceived (see The Production of Space 1973 translated into English in 1991). Having grown up in Birchwood, I carry with me a knowledge of this space in terms of lived experience. This paper examines the problems of locating political subjectivity in the midst of the Glasgow C... more This paper examines the problems of locating political subjectivity in the midst of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games of 2014 and takes as its starting point Ranci ere's contention that politics cannot be defined on the basis of any pre-existing subject. The Commonwealth Games, as both policy vehicle and a form of knowing the world, constructs subjects through the invocation of 'legacy'. This involves assuming a consensual populism within which social problems are identified and rectified through the eventfulness of the event. However, leading on from Ranci ere's contention above, this paper suggests a critical perspective where the event itself is de-centred in order to move beyond the citational response to mega-events: that policy constructs subjugated subjects. The paper proceeds by examining how the logics of local residents of East Glasgow elude subjugation in their encounters with the official discourses of the mega-event. It outlines the ways that political subjectivity is brought forth in two discursive spaces: first, within Games Legacy Evaluation Reports. Second, a public meeting organised by Glasgow City Council as part of their Get Ready Glasgow series. These spaces are considered alongside recent academic criticism that focuses on the corrective elements of social policy relating to sporting mega events.

This article considers the spatial politics of contemporary performance spaces constructed throug... more This article considers the spatial politics of contemporary performance spaces constructed through DIY, improvised noise scenes. Noise (as something performed) is often categorized as “experimental,” “free,” or “avant garde.” It carries associations of emancipation, eschewing as it does conventional musical training, and the constraints of formal compositional and linguistic expression. Unfolding as a debate between the two authors, this article reflects on the contributions post-structural feminist theory brings to an understanding of where and how women practitioners negotiate noise-performance spaces. By considering noise as a conceptual object as well as noise as sonic performance, and by reflecting on debates around radical democracy, the authors debate the issue of female-only performance spaces and their implications on what we can express and how we might be understood. This contribution seeks to initiate further debate on the inherent complexities of how women create and negotiate spaces of noise performance in the face of normative assumptions and associations that have simplified the debate – for example, that the loud, discordant, and arrhythmic is obnoxious, dangerous, and historically a masculine domain.
