«Not (Yet) Cancelled» is the theme of Weltformat Graphic Design Festival 2020 and the newly launched Weltformat magazine that accompanies it.
I had the pleasure to talk with Jacques Uldry, Werner Röthlisberger and Thomi Wolfensberger about different industrial printing techniques and their shift from a commercial to an exclusively artistic practice: Today, screen-printing appears to go through a comparable evolution as lithography after the introduction of offest printing.
Designed by Laura Moor and Raphael Schoen. Published by Präsens Editionen and Verein Weltformat, 2020.

Fresh from the printer and already available on Spector Books and CCA! Published by CCA (Canadian Center for Architecture, Montréal) and Spector Books: The book will be launched at LA Art Book Fair 2020, April 3–5.

Happy New Year! 2020, year of the rat.
And this is my first offset printing test! Small two-toned print run with two different screens.

I’m honoured to be a new member of AGI (Alliance Graphic International). It’s incredible to be part of this professional club of design-fanatics from all over the world, alongside many designers I admire. Thanks to AGI, all the member and dear friends for their support; Paula Troxler, Na Kim, Niklaus Troxler, Erich Brechbühl, Jonas Vögeli, James Goggin and so many more. I’m grateful for this recognition of my rather quiet and slow, but persistent design practice.
Looking forward to share this adventure with all the other new-members, especially Tereza Ruller, Verena Panholzer and Daniel Wiesmann: Cheers to many frenetic discussions and ongoing dialogs in 2020!

A very long time ago I created a set of 80 wood blocks, that allow you to print characters. It was inspired by a modular typface-system called Fregio Mecano, used for example for tiles of a subway-station (as the name implies: fregio = frieze).
This kind modular system is the starting point for a workshop Dafi Kühne and I will be giving at this year’s Welformat Festival. During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to experiment with a letterpress printing machine and print their own posters. These will be designed with modular, self-cut design systems made of grey cardboard as printing forms. After the workshop, the results will be presented in the exhibition Letterpress Posters at Weltformat Graphic Design Festival.

Just got my copy of notamuse—A New Perspective on Women Graphic Designers in Europe! The book is a response to the predominantly male presence in the design scene, this book exclusively presents works by exceptional female designers. It is not about discovering something inherently “female” and defining “feminine” design, but to counter the male-dominated discourse of the sector. The carefully selected graphic works which open new perspectives on how diverse contemporary graphic design can be.With interviews conducted with 22 female designers, sociologists and design theorists. Summer is slowly coming to an end. The guidebooks I designed for this year’s Busan Biennale (with the title “Divided we Stand”) were delivered right on time for the opening. The biennial was curated by artistic director, Cristina Ricupero, curator Jörg Heiser, and guest curator Gahee Park. Look out for the catalog, the topic is highly contemporary, with a nod to the past and the future. Catalog published by SternbergPress.

I had the pleasure of working on the Manual for The Swamp School.
Throughout the 16th International Architecture Exhibition — La Biennale di Venezia, the Swamp School will function as a changing, flexible, open-ended structure that supports experiments in design, pedagogy and artistic intelligence. Invited designers and scholars will conduct performative lectures
and lead workshops for visitors to the Biennale, all of whom are invited to participate. In exploring the imaginary of a swamp—a living organism in which borders defined by social, political and cultural factors are porous and permeable—we will investigate an open artistic/architectural form and effective workshop and publication methodologies.
Curators of the Lithuanian pavilion, Nomeda & Gediminas Urbonas.
May–November 2018
The Swamp School is happening in three chapters:
1
Swamp Radio (on Transmitting)
May 23–27, 2018
2
Futurity Island (on Sympoietics)
June 26–30, 2018
3
Commonism (on Cohabiting)
September 24–29, 2018

Have you ever judged a book by its scent or sound? This it the title of my contribution to the upcoming exhibition Out of the Box during the 28th International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2018.
I will present the most accomplished sounding books from my library. The selection takes in consideration the relation of format, size, volume and materiality of the object. All books have been examined by the same seven modes of handling:
1 Scratching the cover
2 Tapping (with knuckles)
3 Flicking through (fast)
4 Dropping (altitude: 5–8 cm)
5 Creaking
6 Wobbling aka «The Flopp»
7 Closing with a snap
Sound recording: Beat Jegen, Zürich

The exhibition In Our Present Condition (N–Z) is the result of the class Advanced Workshop in Artistic Practice and Transdisciplinary Research: Porous Boundaries, Shifting Borders, and Fertile Edges. This class focused on collaborative artistic research projects related to ACT’s recognition of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS), a unique and renowned center of artistic research founded at MIT in 1967, and the predecessor to ACT.
The show is part of the many events and exhibits associated with the year-long celebration of the anniversary.
Co-taught by the CAVS 50th anniversary curatorial team: Laura Knott, Lars Bang Larsen, and Gediminas Urbonas.
I had the honor to create the visuals for the exhibition. More soon
