Due to discussion in the Podcast Suggestions thread, a few users came together and start a podcast focused towards the Ach user base. We hope to cover topics of interest to the forum and the world at large. The goal is to publish every two weeks and discuss current and retro Apple topics. The podcast won’t be heavily focused on Apple news, other than addressing items of note in brief. In a world already full of Apple News podcasts and people trying to be the next big analyst, I think there’s room for more general discussion on topics. There's tons of Apple history to dig into, as well as technology that's tangential to them that other podcasts might not pay attention to.

Some future topics we’ll discuss: Lost Apple software, Living with CarPlay, App store reviews, old Mac Books (not MacBooks), using the iPad in aviation, Useful Utilities, workflow topics, and more.

The crew: kefkafloyd and Otto Pilot (hosts), antiwraith (editor and contributor)

Hot features: We support rich show notes as well as podcast chapter markers. Our schedule is posting on every other Wednesday.

You can find it on:
RSS Feed for non-Apple/Overcast players: http://icongardenshow.libsyn.com/rss

Also, we use Discord (an iRC replacement, like Slack) to discuss the show, do planning and et cetera. If you are interested in joining and chatting about the show, click here to join the Discord server: https://discord.gg/z2jmF93

Macinography - Our new series in off-weeks focusing on interesting Apple and Apple-adjacent products. Long form scripted shows taking a deep, researched dive into something specific and interesting.

1 - The Macintosh LC II - The venerable pizza box form factor started with the LC series. What made these Macs special, and how did they impact the market? One Mac for delivery, coming right up. August 14, 2019
2 - System 7 - The Mac needed an OS for the 90s, and System 7 took the mantle from an unlikely position. Would seven be the Mac's lucky number? September 25, 2019
3 - The Titanium PowerBook G4 - Some laptops had power. Others had style. Wouldn't you want to have it all? Steve thought so, and one of the most beautiful—yet flawed—laptops was born. - October 23, 2019
4 - The Rise and Fall of Iomega's Zip Drive - Floppies were fluky, tapes were tardy, and SyQuests were spendy. Mac users needed cheap, plentiful external storage. What could save the day? Iomega's Zip disk promised 100 MB of fast storage, but would it be enough to take over the removable storage world? - November 20, 2019
5 - The Macintosh Color Classic - After nearly ten years, the compact Mac form factor was looking, well, a bit gray. Apple's new color compact Mac got a shiny new display, but would end up being known more for its life after cancellation. - December 18, 2019
6 - Microsoft Word 5.1- The humble word processor is a ubiquitous part of computing. But much like the Battlefront of operating systems, fans of word processors extolled the virtues and exploited their tools to the highest order. Perhaps none is more highly regarded than Word 5.1, and we look at why this iteration still stands the test of time. - January 29, 2020
7 - The First Power Macs- In the nineties, Apple's processor architecture was falling behind the competition. Motorola won a few battles, but Intel was winning the war. Enter IBM with a hot new architecture that could help both Apple and Motorola. Would they succeed in putting more Power into the Mac? And just how good were those first generation Power Macs anyway? Listen to find out. - February 26, 2020
8 - FireWire - For years, high performance I/O on the Mac was SCSI, the persnickety and often mis-terminated friend we loved to hate. Apple had a plan to put SCSI to bed with a new technology that would put other bus protocols on notice. Listen in to learn the story of FireWire and how it navigated a crowded I/O market. - March 25
9 - The First PowerBooks - In the eighties, our arms ached from lugging around big, heavy portable computers everywhere. Some companies started making laptops, but the real game changer were notebooks made by NEC and Compaq. Where was Apple in all of this? They stumbled with the Mac Portable, but a resourceful team had a plan: make the smallest, most powerful notebooks on the market. Listen in to learn about the birth of the PowerBook and how Apple changed laptop history. - April 22
10 - OpenDoc and Apple's Development Doldrums - In the beleaguered era, developing for the Macintosh was radically different than today. But one project of Apple’s stood out from the rest. OpenDoc wasn’t just a way to link data, but aimed to redefine how we interact with documents and applications. With partners like IBM, Novell, and WordPerfect, how could it fail? - May 20, 2020
11 - Trackpads and the Portable Pointing Device Wars - The ubiquitous trackpad on our laptops had humble beginnings. Listen to the history of touchpads and how they fought trackballs and trackpoints to gain mobile pointing device leadership. - June 17, 2020
12 - The Macintosh II Series - Steve Jobs loved his all-in-one Mac, but not everyone was happy with its limitations. Even before Steve’s departure, engineers were planning a new expandable Mac with color screens and lots of power. From the cancelled Big Mac to a Wicked Fast IIfx, the projects that made the Macintosh II series were some of Apple’s most influential. July 29, 2020
13 - The Sexy, Sassy Story of SCSI - Apple made a strategic blunder when they shipped the Mac without a hard disk drive. Meanwhile, computing was yearning for standard interfaces for attaching these spinning disks. Listen to learn the history of SCSI, the interface that brought mass storage to the Mac. August 26, 2020
14 - The LC 500 and Power Mac 5000 Series - A long time ago, in a schoolyard far far away, the computer was a rarity. Apple conquered the classrooms of the eighties with the Apple II, but repeating that success in the nineties with the Macintosh would be a more difficult feat. Before the iMac, Apple launched many big-screen all in ones. Listen to find out how successful (or disastrous) this was for Apple in their most challenging era yet. September 30, 2020
15 - The Road to ARMageddon - November 2020 marks the thirtieth anniversary of ARM Limited. With Apple switching to Arm-based Apple Silicon for Macs, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's Arm's desktop debut, but it's not the first time for Arm on the desktop. How did ARM go from powering Acorn Computers, a veteran of the British Micro wars, into the world's most popular architecture? And how did Apple and ARM save each other in their hours of need? Listen in to find out. October 21, 2020
16 - How The Aaron Extension Saved the World - If there’s one thing users love, it’s customizing their computers. Extensions were the cause of, and solution to, all of Classic Mac OS’ problems. The humble INIT made your Mac more powerful, or just more attractive. Ironically, the system that tried to kill the extension, Copland, inspired some of the most popular add-ons—especially ones that mimicked its new interface. Was Jeff Goldblum really running the Aaron extension on his PowerBook in Independence day? Listen to learn how the shareware community, and the Aaron extension, changed the Mac. November 18, 2020
17 - The Print Shop - Decades ago, making your own holiday cards was a tedious affair of hand writing and poorly drawing a season’s greeting. What if your new home computer made it easy to design attractive custom cards? You’d make one for everybody—even Uncle Frank. Aldus and Adobe might have led the charge, but Broderbund Software was just as critical to introducing desktop publishing to the masses. But there’s more to this groundbreaking app than banners—it starred in a titanic legal battle to determine the future of software copyright. Tune in to find out. December 17, 2020

Feel free to post feedback (complaints, criticism, compliments, etc) here in this thread. We'll post when we're doing recordings and we'd like suggestions/questions relating to upcoming shows so we can include them in the discussion. We're not trying to speak for the whole forum, we're just two guys talking about Apple and Macs.

Note: Episodes 1 and 2 will sound a little different because I will be editing them due to antiwraith having a personal matter to attend to in the past week.

Our theme song is composed by Space Vixen, whose work you can find at http://spacevixen.bandcamp.com.

I like it. Any way of improving the sound situation with Otto? Kefka sounds like he’s in a professional studio. The difference can be a little jarring.

With regard to the new Pro. Do you think Apple will finally make the jump to USB-C on the rest of iOS? I find USB-C to be a huge upgrade. No more proprietary crap for HDMI out. My phantom powered mics and powered keyboards work without issue. Lightning can’t die fast enough.

Otto's actually using the exact same equipment I use (audio-technica mic, XLR interface, etc) but the difference is in room tone and addressing the mic. I'm actually just recording on the couch in my living room, so my "studio" is not very professional at all. :) His tone does sound better in #1 versus #0 and we're working to improve his space (like getting acoustic dampening and so on).

This is definitely something I want to talk about next time regarding the new iPad. No spoilers, but I think they have some work to do before fully committing to USB-C.

Cool! Subscribing now. It's not showing up in searches from Downcast to iTunes but the link did work.

Strange, it did show up in a search in the iTunes store here. Downcast wasn't one I thought of though, so I'll have to make sure we show up there.

It's showing up now. Downcast may be buffering things or doing something odd.

As mentioned above, our next episode is going to focus on looking at the new iPad Pro. One thing I'd like to solicit some experiences or stories from the folks here is use of the iPad for "pro" stuff beyond the standard realm of creatives and coders. I think those uses have been done pretty thoroughly, and I personally use the iPad for a much different definition of "pro" and I'd like to see what folks think the iPad does well, or pain points, related to using the iPad in a "pro" environment beyond the usual.

Does professional student count? My iPad Pro is absolutely indispensable in the classroom for language learning. I can scan handouts in real time, extract text, translate, record lectures, mark up documents, fill out answers, etc.

The main pain points so far have been software related. There are times when three windows would make a big difference. Sometimes the reduced feature set of the smaller windows really hinders some functionality. I know this isn’t a problem on the 12.9” since it uses full sized windows when subdivided 50/50 but it can really irritate on the 11”.

Another problem is the on-screen keyboard. They eliminated the split mode and it really takes up an inordinately large amount of space in horizontal orientation. Also, the permanent home bar at the bottom of some screens can obscure text. It would be nice to make it optional or perhaps fade out on a timer.

There’s still some stuff for which the iPad is no substitute. If I am working on a longer form document, I go straight to my iMac — the iPad simply can’t touch the ability to reference half a dozen windows on a giant screen with the speed and ease of a mouse input.

Otherwise I’m spending about 4 hours a day on my iPad Pro and another 6 on a mini (almost exclusively in keynote). But when I’m putting together keynote stuff, I wouldn’t even consider the iPad, it’s always back to the iMac for the same reasons above.

Be nice to have slightly more conflict in the podcast. i.e. debate points you disagree upon. I obviously don't mean in a mean way. But I think many of us learn the most when there's disagreement. Even if we're partial to one side, seeing the other side is important and that comes out better in debate IMO. I think you see that here in the forum. Especially when I don't know much about the topic (say CPU manufacture) seeing others debate it is deeply illuminating.

I should add that I really like the rapport you guys have. I've only listened to the first episode, not episode 0 yet, so maybe you've addressed that there.

To the iPad Pro, I completely agree with you that there's a certain monoculture at work in how the Pro gets discussed. It's coders where it fails to creatives where painting or drawing work great with a few exceptions. I actually think something that doesn't get enough attention is its possible place in small business. A lot of "drone" machines are used for a very limited number of tasks usually oriented around simple spreadsheets and word processing and occasionally data entry in accounting programs. Quickbooks is available via the online version right now. The larger screen makes a big difference in entry. Obviously Word and Pages are there for word processing. And Pages is robust enough to do simple page layout. (You can try to do that in Word but it's an exercise in frustration) Spreadsheets of the sort most use also work fine. Don't get me wrong. There's still a lot of pain points primarily due to the way iOS and many applications handle keyboard shortcuts. I also think having a way to get the trackpad mode while using a keyboard is a huge blind spot in iOS. It's frustrating that the on screen keyboard allows better cursor movement than a real keyboard.

The second thing I rarely hear discussed are portable databases. Filemaker has a few options there. But the real place of interest are more robust single oriented databases such as CRMs (say dedicated applications like Daylite, Salesforce or dedicated web apps) as well as inventory control and a lot else. There's a lot to be said about the iPad as a portable database portal particularly for workflows like inventory control. Why this doesn't get discussed more I can't fathom. Obviously the larger screen sizes in the Pro lineup enables a lot here. Although the very cheap price of the entry iPad also is quite interesting for employees doing such entry. This seems the elephant in the room in terms of iPads in business. Yet it surprisingly gets almost no attention in the press. Even just for the myriad of crappy web apps the iPad is an interesting choice.

Having trouble putting together the time/words necessary for a proper critique. This is partially because, in general, it’s a good show so far. Please take the following with the appropriate dose of salt and the understanding that I’m dashing off the words over an non-leisurely, “I have an early shift” breakfast.

I’m with Clark on the lack of controversy and agree that it would be nice if topics could be explored that didn’t produce a mutual admiration society. I’m glad that you both seem like nice guys and its absolutely great that you have a chemistry and a mutual respect and I’m not looking for a contrived “argument” either. However the result is that the podcast comes off a bit more like a presentation than a conversation. This is enhanced by the reasonably strict intercuts in the conversation. Very little interruption. Very little talk over. At times if feels like one of those “cutaway” interviews shot with a single camera. Almost as if you’re reading an essay or script, not talking and reacting to each other.

More around what I realize is this same topic. I’m just going to summerize:

I think the show would benefit from being a more organic conversation with a less “scripted” & staged feel and by introducing contrary viewpoints, either amongst the hosts or by “calling out” opposing comments in the forums or other media. And even if you don’t change a thing I wish you a long, long run because this is a case of “hypercritical” - it’s really good. It’s just that (in my mind) it can always be better.

I’m going to try to take real time to respond to the iPad Pro conversation. I want to help this succeed in any way I can and want to participate as an active member of the community. I have to admit that I’m a bit “jealous” of this launch. I was very, very close to responding to the intitial call to action and I am very much interested in the project. Not certain exactly what my hesitation was — though I recall I was a bit buried at work at the time (and will continue to be through the holiday). Anyhow, please accept this criticism as it is intended — as thoughts on improvement, not indication that anything is dramatically wrong — and know that I wish you all the success in the world. And (to paraphrase a line from the surfing movie In God’s Hands,) I will help you if I can.

Best Regards!

It's a perfectly reasonable criticism and it's the nature of getting started. Until we started doing this we'd never talked to each other before, so there's still a lot of learning about how we talk to each other and how to bring out something from each host. I tend to be a little too courteous when talking so my instinct is when someone jumps in and we have overlap, I tend to go "whoops, you go ahead." It is a downside of not being in the same room and still feeling out people's natural inclinations towards interrupting and interplay. I'll be less aggressive in cutting out some of the overlap when I edit the PowerBook episode.

Adding a guest usually changes that up for the better, so in the future when we can have a guest I think that will address a lot of that.

The iPad episode will have a lot more debating since I don't really use iPads and I'm more on the skeptic side of their utility.

Thanks to all of you for listening and for the very reasonable input so far. We certainly appreciate all of it. As Kefka said, I think a lot of this will naturally get more conversational as we move along and get comfortable.

Yeah, and take that as constructive criticism. I'm frankly amazed at how well you did off the bat. Have you been on podcasts before? I ask because as I noted in the other thread it's amazingly difficult to do in my opinion. The times I was on a podcast I had a very hard time telling when someone had stopped talking - coming to realize I depend a lot on non-verbal cues. I'm very much of the opinion that the ability to do these sorts of things is a skill many don't appreciate. It takes time and practice for most people. (At least it did for me)

No I haven’t. This is my first podcast experience (other than the 1000s of listening hours...) and it has been great fun and a great learning experience so far. Kefka and antiwraith are very patient with the newcomer. I don some public speaking for my day job but this is entirely different. Thanks for the compliment and all criticism is constructive at this point!

Congrats! I love that our bitching about ATP (except Siracusa, the patron saint of the Ach - +1 to BenN’s suggestion) inspired people enough to get off their rears and try to do better! It’s no small commitment, thanks for the contribution to the community, and I wish you a long run.

As for iPad Pro, when I was doing IT management, the iPad could’ve done 90% of my work. The actual tasks involved in that job - and the job of other senior management at BigCorps/consultancies - is pretty limited:
  • Go to meetings
  • take notes
  • write emails based on those notes
  • reply to emails
  • review documents
  • review powerpoints
  • occasionally refer to a spreadsheet
  • very rarely create your own document, PowerPoint or spreadsheet
  • oh and keep track of where all that stuff is at
The multitasking there is usually limited to replying to email (or Slack or whatever) while referring to notes, a document, or a spreadsheet. The iPad can handle that OK - for all the bitching about iOS multitasking, if you’re just juggling two office-y apps it can cope. The only reason it would’ve only been 90% is that I did still do code reviews, testing, a bit of development, etc. for which I needed a laptop. Many of my counterparts in non-IT management often did use an iPad as a primary device. For that matter, a couple of them just used a phone as a primary device.

Another reason I stuck to a laptop was that it was also very useful to come back to the office and plug in to an external monitor to have a document, a spreadsheet, a PowerPoint and an email all open at the same time! I think there’s a hard limit on how “productive” you can be at multitasking with a 12” screen no matter the OS. Obviously the iPad supports external monitors now in a nascent way, so there’s a path forward there.

It is also excellent as a research/study device as meteparozzi0 mentioned. I often use it to read papers, mark them up with the pencil, take notes in notability (with the pencil or typed), and so on. It’s much better than a Mac for this work. For example LiquidPaper is an app that’s almost the perfect app for this, it’s a great example of something you just couldn’t do on a Mac or any desktop. However when it comes to producing the results of that research - writing a new paper or something - I switch to the Mac. Mashing info together from >2 sources/apps just sucks on iOS at the moment, and you need to do that a lot when writing. Whether it’s a function of iOS multitasking or whether it’s simply screen size is another question.

I am also super curious to hear about more niche uses, like in aviation, that sounds cool. And the kind of single-purpose things. In the olden days I was in GIS, and they used a lot of in-field devices, none of which were as good as the iPad. I got out of that industry just as the retina iPads were released so I’m not sure if they’ve taken over, but I hope they have, they’d be perfect. Same for a lot of construction/resources in-field work. Also, you have to notice that every new cafe/restaurant/shop has an iPad and a Stripe terminal as their PoS system.

Hey guys,

Fellow podcaster here. I suggest you check out AUPHONIC, especially in the multi-track mode. It'll help make your audio consistent across all your mics. It isn't free but its cheap as in beer and will make a big difference. It did for us. http://auphonic.com

It won't help with the off-mic sound of Otto but it'll bring you guys closer together. To my ear, it sounds like the reverb in his environment is the issue, which means he needs to mic himself WAY closer. Like. basically kiss that mf-er.

The iPad episode (which we just recorded on Monday) has somewhat better room and mic tone for Otto, unfortunately the acoustic tiles he ordered for his space were stolen off his porch the day before the record so we've still got some reflections. We're working together to improve his space so things will be better. Today he got the tiles set up and changed some other things in his setup and sounds much closer to my tone. So the CarPlay episode (next one to be recorded) will feature a much better sounding Jake!

The PowerBook episode (going up next Wednesday) is edited and I think people will enjoy it, though it is definitely more of a retro revue type thing. I happen to like that kind of thing as my youtube history is full of Lazy Game Reviews and 8-Bit Guy, but others' mileage may vary.

Auphonic seems interesting. My skills at audio editing are novice level and my workflow is positively archaic, but now that antiwraith is back he'll be editing the episodes going forward (I'm just a pinch hitter). One thing I'd really like to find a replacement for is Zencastr. It does a job pretty well (making sure that everyone records with guests and doesn't botch it) but I've never been satisfied with the fact that they've never completely solved their drift problems in multitrack recording. It also doesn't work on iOS or Safari despite the fact that they've supported WebRTC for over a year now.

Also, I appreciate everyone's comments and suggestions for the iPad episode, which we used very well and since our next episode will be about CarPlay, I'm asking for the same kinds of comments/experiences. Otto and I have CarPlay capable cars (His is an OEM solution while mine is aftermarket) and I have several opinions on how it can be improved, but more thoughts are always welcome.

I spent some time last night learning about how to improve the sound quality in my recording space and ended up hanging a bunch of acoustic tiles (not stolen this time...maybe thieves fear the possibility of the glitter bomb!) in my office and optimized placement of my microphone. We did a test recording and the verdict seems to be that the sound quality is much improved. So please bear with me on sound issues through the next two episodes, which have already been recorded. I will be very interested in hearing any feedback after the Carplay one, which will be the first one recorded after optimizations.

Episode 2 is live: The Evolution of the PowerBook

Today in the Garden: Taking down aliens, one laptop at a time.

For our second regular show, we break out the Icon Garden Time Machine and take a trip back to the bygone days of 1991, as we take a semi-exhaustive retrospective look at the history of the PowerBook line of Apple laptops, the groundbreaking line that arguably set trends in laptop design and function that still exist today. Also, we take the Pludge on updates for iOS, MacOS, and WatchOS, and briefly discuss the EKG functionality.

Hey all,

We're getting ready to record our post-CarPlay episode about classic (pre OS X) Mac games. We've already compiled a short list of games we want to talk about (stuff like Marathon, SimCity, old point-n-clicks, etc), but we're definitely open to suggestions from the community.

I'd also like to thank everyone for the feedback we've gotten (both public and private) and for sticking with us through the beginning. The iPad episode is on schedule for this coming Wednesday, and CarPlay for two weeks after that.

I just tested the RSS feed in NetNewsWire and a separate iTunes instance of direct RSS subscribe and everything comes up OK. What are you using for a player?

Downcast. There was some problem initially adding it then it worked fine. I just tried deleting and readding on both the iOS and Mac apps and couldn't get it to work with either. I just deleted it then manually added the rss and that seems to fix it. Weird. Wonder what's up with Downcast. I've never had trouble in all the years I've been using it. It's pretty regularly updated too.

I prefer Downcast as its one of the few podcast apps that sync between the Mac and iOS. It also has a watch app, a CarPlay app, plus it lets you put mp3s in manually for talks or the like. (Although Overcast just added that)

Here are the shownotes for the latest episode on the new iPad Pro. We hope you like this one and welcome all comments, good, bad, and indifferent.

Episode 3: Today in the Garden: What is a computer? A miserable little pile of circuits.

For our third regular show, first we look at a few items of Apple news, including new servers and a major campus upgrade in Austin. Then we take an in-depth look at the 2018 iPad Pro, its ecosystem and accessories, talk a lot about whether USB-C is the “one cable to rule them all” and look at some professional use cases to see whether the iPad Pro lives up to its Pro billing.

Just wanted to chime in that I enjoyed the most recent episode (consumed on release day) and am looking forward to the next. So much wrong in some of the opinions expressed by kefkfloyd I was yelling at the infotainment system in the car. Well done! (Of course NOW for the life of me I can’t remember what he said that I disagreed with so strongly — might have been something regarding USB-C v. Lightning.)

Definitely hearing improvement in the banter and less of the “mutual admiration society “ feel from the initial episodes. Looking forward to the improvement in audio and…

To the CarPlay discussion.

Keep it up!

I don't think it's controversial to say that lightning should go away in favor of USB type C. :) Other than having to go through another transition, it is the right transition.
