- Bren Bataclan is a Filipino-American artist. Based in Cambridge, he has left more than 3000 of his paintings in public spaces that passers-by can take for free, if, according to an attached note, they "promise to smile at random people more often." A street art project known as "Project Smile," Bataclan has given away anime-inspired paintings in 80 countries worldwide and in every state in the US since he began the project in 2003. He has also painted murals at more than 250 schools, hospitals and community institutions. Bataclan has published two books. His first, published in 2003, focused on the Smile Project. His second, Fe: A Traumatized Son’s Graphic Memoir, was published by Philippine American Writers and Artists, Inc (PAWA, Inc.) in 2021. Focused on Bataclan's relationship with his mother, NPR wrote that Fe was a "brilliant, sensitive story of a mother and son." An elementary school textbook about his artwork was published by Heinemann Press. Bataclan was born in the Philippines and moved to Daly City, California with his family when he was 12. His paintings were inspired by the Giant Robot television shows Voltes V and Mazinger he watched as a child. He received a BA in design at UCLA and an MA in computer animation at the Ohio State University and taught design and computer animation at UMass Amherst prior to becoming a fulltime artist. (en)
