- The Castillonais or Cheval Ariègeois de Castillon , also formerly called Cheval du Biros or Saint-Gironnais, is an ancient breed of small rustic saddle-horse from the Ariège département of south-western France. It may be dark bay or seal brown. It stands 135–155 centimetres at the withers, with an average height of about 145 cm. It is used principally for trekking and for driving. The Castillonnais probably descends from the horses that inspired the Magdalenian-era paintings found, for example, at the Cave of Niaux, with Oriental and Iberian blood added later. Originally bred as a multi-purpose breed used for cavalry, agriculture and driving, the breed declined in population during the 20th century, and almost became extinct. In 1980, a group of supporters began to work to save the breed, and a breed association, now called the Association Nationale du Cheval Castillonnais d'Ariège Pyrénées, was formed in 1992. The breed was officially recognised by the French Ministry of Agriculture in 1996. The French government, breed association and a regional conservation group all now share an interest in the preservation of the breed. Population numbers are still quite low, and inbreeding is a concern. (en)
- Le Castillonnais, ou cheval de Castillon, représente une ancienne race de petits chevaux de selle rustiques d'origine française. Connu au début du XXe siècle, ce petit cheval a failli disparaître avec la venue de la motorisation. Il est sauvé de justesse par quelques passionnés. Reconnu par les haras nationaux en 1996, il reste à très faible effectif. Une association d'éleveurs et le haras national de Tarbes se mobilisent pour sauvegarder et préserver la race. Portant une robe bai-brun (noir pangaré) ou bai foncé, il est très proche du Mérens, avec lequel il partage de nombreuses caractéristiques, mais nettement moins connu. C'est un bon cheval de loisir qui peut être monté en randonnée et attelé avec succès. Il vit principalement à l'extrémité sud-ouest de l'Ariège, dans les Pyrénées, dans un terroir éponyme caractérisé par la vallée du Lez, près de Saint-Girons. (fr)
- Castillonhästen är en ganska liten hästras som avlas vid foten av bergskedjan Pyrenéerna i Frankrike. Rasen är nära kusin med den franska ponnyrasen Ariégeoisponny och har influenser av iberiska och orientaliska hästar vilket gett rasen ett nobelt och ädlare utseende. Castillonhästen är ca 135-155 cm i mankhöjd, är flexibel och säker på foten som bergshäst och hästarna är alltid mörkt svartbruna med ljusare partier runt flankerna och en brun mule som lokalt kallas "rävnos". Castillonhästen ska inte blandas ihop med den kastilianska hästen som på franska kallas Cheval de Castillion, medan Castillonhästen kallas Castillionnais. (sv)
