- Unter Diminution (von lateinisch deminutio ‚Verkleinerung‘) versteht man in der Musik verschiedene Sachverhalte:
* Im allgemeineren Sinne bedeutet Diminution die Verkleinerung von Notenwerten (z. B. von halben Noten zu Viertelnoten). So ist es beispielsweise möglich, dass ein musikalisches Thema im Verlauf eines Stückes auch einmal in diminuierter Form, also in kürzeren Notenwerten und damit schneller erklingt. Werden Notenwerte hingegen vergrößert, spricht man von Augmentation.
* Diminution kann auch die Intervallstruktur eines Stücks betreffen; dann werden Tonsprünge in einer Melodie verkleinert. Auch hier heißt das gegensätzliche Verfahren Augmentation.
* Diminution im spezielleren Sinne ist eine Art der Verzierung, die mit Verkleinerung des Zeitwerts der Noten arbeitet. Beim Diminuieren einer Melodie werden die gegebenen Noten zu Notengruppen mit halben, geviertelten oder anderweitig unterteilten Notenwerten. In jeder dieser Notengruppen taucht der ursprüngliche Ton in der Regel (aber nicht immer) wenigstens einmal auf, während die anderen Tonhöhen dazu erfunden werden. Als Ergebnis entsteht eine Melodielinie, die wie eine Umspielung der Originalmelodie in schnelleren Tönen wirkt. Die Diminution wurde in der zu einem beliebten Mittel der improvisierten Variation. En ĉiu el ĉi tiu notgrupoj la origina tono aperas kutime (sed ne ĉiam) almenaŭ unu fojon, dum kiam la aliaj tonaltoj estas inventataj al tiu. Diminution may be a form of embellishment in which a long note is divided into a series of shorter, usually melodic, values (also called "coloration"; Ger. Kolorieren). Diminution may also be the compositional device where a melody, theme or motif is presented in shorter note-values than were previously used. Diminution is also the term for the proportional shortening of the value of individual note-shapes in mensural notation, either by coloration or by a sign of proportion. A minor or perfect interval that is narrowed by a chromatic semitone is a diminished interval, and the process may be referred to as diminution (this, too, was sometimes referred to as "coloration").
