- Drag Race is a television drag queen reality competition franchise created by American drag entertainer RuPaul, and the production company World of Wonder. It originated in the United States with RuPaul's Drag Race in 2009, where it was devised as a replacement for Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World (2007–2009). The show's aim is to find the next "Drag Superstar" who possesses the traits of "charisma", "uniqueness", "nerve" and "talent". RuPaul stated that the show looks for an entertainer who can stand out from the rest. RuPaul's Drag Race is often credited for bringing drag into the "mainstream" media. RuPaul's Drag Race has produced fourteen seasons to date (as of 2022) and has inspired several spin-off series, including RuPaul's Drag U, RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race, along with spawning many international versions. In addition three drag fan conventions ('DragCons') have been created: RuPaul's DragCon LA, RuPaul's DragCon NYC, and RuPaul's DragCon UK. During an interview with co-creator of the franchise, Fenton Bailey, he stated that the shows success was down to "Everyone can relate to the feeling of being an outsider. Drag is ultimately a universally relatable thing," Bailey said of the popularity of "Drag Race" and the stars it has helped create." RuPaul had initially refused to do a reality television competition programme, before later changing his mind. Bailey said at the time there was "a resistance to drag on TV" and "the door felt closed". Therefore, World of Wonder ended up co-financing the first season themselves before it was picked up by Logo, the channel where it ran for eight seasons. Randy Barbato expressed that "Drag Race" is creating a platform that allows existing drag talent to be seen: "We are not creating a drag empire — a drag empire already exists. It's global and we are turning people on to it. That is an important distinction." (en)
