- Εκλογές διεξάγονται στο Μπουρούντι, που είναι πολυκομματική δημοκρατία, για πρόεδρο και για Κοινοβούλιο. Το Κοινοβούλιο αποτελείται από την 100μελή Εθνοσυνέλευση και τη Γερουσία, με 54 έδρες. Η Εθνοσυνέλευση εκλέγεται από το λαό με καθολική ψηφοφορία για πενταετή θητεία και αποτελείται από Χούτου κατά 60% και από Τούτσι κατά 40%. Ο Νκουρουνζίζα εξελέγη πρόεδρος από το Κοινοβούλιο με 151 ψήφους υπέρ έναντι 9 κατά. Το Φεβρουάριο του 2005 υιοθετήθηκε Σύνταγμα, το οποίο εγκρίθηκε σε δημοψήφισμα.
