Since inception, the race has been contested at various distances and as initially a handicap as the race was known as the Excelsior Handicap: * 1+1⁄16 miles : 1903–1960 * 1 mile : 1960 * 1 mile, 1 furlong : 1961–1978 * 1+1⁄8 miles : 1994–2014, 2018-2019, 2021 * 1+1⁄4 miles : 1979–1993, 2015–2017 The event was downgraded from Grade III to Listed in 2022.
