Elle est diplômée du lycée Norman, à Norman dans l’Oklahoma, a une licence de physiothérapie (B.S. degree in Physical Therapy ) et un master de géographie (spécialité en cartographie) de l’Université d'Oklahoma. Alors qu’elle assiste aux cours de l’université, elle rencontre Todd Fonstad. Ils se marient le 21 mars 1970. Ils ont deux enfants : le docteur Mark Fonstad et Kristina Stingle. Karen Fonstad meurt le 11 mars 2005 à l’âge de 59 ans des suites d’un cancer du sein. (fr)

Mieli dwójkę dzieci: Dr. Marka Fonstada i Kristine (Kristi) Stingle. Zmarła 11 marca 2005 roku na raka piersi. Wydała w 1981 roku Atlas Śródziemia, który w 1991 roku ukazał się ponownie w uzupełnionym i poprawionym wydaniu. Ukazywał on geografię i dzieje Śródziemia, zawierał opis i geografię miejsc przedstawionych w Silmarillionie, Hobbicie i Władcy Pierścieni. W Polsce Atlas... ukazał się nakładem wydawnictwa Amber w 1998 roku, później w innym formacie i w innej szacie graficznej Atlas wyszedł w reedycji w 2007 i 2008 roku. (pl)
